Father, daughter sang songs, told stories to pass time until rescue continued from p.1 travelling north along the shoreline. They encountered an object in the water used to collect water samples, which forced them to readjust their position. With strong southwesterly winds, the boat capsized 90 degrees, which Alun describes as normal for a boat that size. Moments later, it tipped another 90. "It was facing straight down in the water. We were then in a bit of a problem. The boat can't come up from that position," he said. The boat was completely turtled by 3 p.m. The pair tried for two hours to bring it upright, to no avail. Neither brought a cellphone or any other means of communication. Looking in the distance, there were no other boats in the water and no rescue units in sight -- although both said they were never in fear for their lives. "I knew someone would eventually find us, but it was really scary," Morgan said. Alun's wife, Carolyn, went looking for her husband after he failed to pick up Morgan's twin brother, Rhyn, from Canada's Wonderland. She went down to the club and saw his vehicle parked, but did not see his boat. Coast Guard located boat on radar "I was quite panicked. I was really, really worried. It got fixed quick, but it seemed like a really long time," she said. Halton police Burlington Staff Sgt. Gerard Kelly received a distress call at 8:09 p.m. after Carolyn called police. Rescue units searched for the missing boat for a few hours before the coast guard spotted it on radar approximately one and a half miles east of Newport Marina in Stoney Creek. In the water, Alun and Morgan sat on the upside down pontoon with their feet in the water trying to pass the time. "She was terrific. We sang songs together, talked about stories and made each other laugh," said Alun. He said his biggest fear was being run over by commercial traffic. When the coast guard arrived, they came alongside the overturned boat and 3 | Friday, August 29, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com At left, Alun and Morgan Phillips are glad to be back on dry land after surviving six hours in the chilly waters of Lake Ontario where their boat capsized. Halton police then brought them to Bronte, where Alun's mother and wife were waiting. The coast guard tried to salvage the boat, but it split in two when a lasso was thrown onto the pontoon to bring it upright. "It's funny, you're alone on a tiny floating piece of pontoon and you know that you're survival rate is still enormously high, but it's not 100 per cent," said Alun. Halton police are urging boaters to bring cellphones and flares whenever they head out onto the water.
