According to police, the incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. as three youths entered the Esso station at 305 Dundas St. One of them brandished a knife at the clerk and demanded money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, one of the suspects held the door open while the third loaded car tons of cigarettes into a knapsack. When an SUV pulled into the lot, all three fled west on foot. Officers responded immediately, con tacted the Canine Unit and started a search of the area. Three suspects were quickly appre hended after being found by Const. Rick Lostracco and his police dog Honour. Police also recovered the knife and some of the stolen property. Branch 114 of the Royal Canadian Legion purchased the Oakville Rod and Gun Club building at 36 Upper Middle Rd. E. last summer and. after extensive renovations, the Legion moved into its new home on Feb. I. An official opening will be celebrated this Sunday at 2 p.m. Pastor Doug Bramer. Branch 114 First Vice President Bill Shields, Second Vice President Cyril Scott and Andrews will dedicate the building. Many local dignitaries are expected to attend, including Oakville MP Bonnie Brown, Oakville MPP Gary Carr, Halton Region Chair Joyce Savoline and Mayor Ann Mulvale. Royal Canadian Legion officials expected to attend include Provincial Command Vice President Gordon Moore, District B Commander Bob Sivyer, District B Deputy Commanders Mac McLean and Oliver Bilton, Zone 7 Commander Bill Poland, Zone 7 Deputy Commander Sharon McKewen. The Legion had been homeless for the past two years. It had sold its old down town location at the comer of Church and Navy Streets because it had become a money-losing situation. Members were unable to negotiate the staircases in the building, and parking had also become a problem. The Oakville Legion had been downtown since 1941. It's charter dates back to 1919 when the Great War Veterans Association of Canada (Oakville Branch) was formed. The building was sold in favour of finding a one-storey ground level location with plenty of free parking. The former Rod and Gun Club building fit the bill the Rod and Gun Club is no longer in operation. While searching for a new location, it used the facilities of the Bronte Legion. "It's been a long hard job trying to find a suitable place for our members," said Mark Andrews, president of Legion 114, Royal Canadian Legion. It currently has 394 members. She was very like that," said Cathy Goodale. "Very loving and very family oriented." Carol was diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer last August, after being cancer free for two and a half years. With rock solid support from her extended family and from her friends and from the community, she turned her considerable tenacity to researching alternative treatments. Her ultimate goal was to help not just herself, but others facing a similar diag nosis. "We eventually hope -- it would be a dream -- to have a charity that would help others," said Carol in a November interview. "Because I'm finding this hard. Just imagine what other people are going through. "It would be nice to help others with information gathering and guidance through the information and eventually fundraising."
