Toyota has. consistently, taken a core car and mas saged it here, enhanced it there, and increased the size here and there. This week's 20()3 Camry SE tester is a perfect exam ple of how Toyota works to meet buyer aspirations and gives people what they want, as opposed to we in the media tell consumers they should have. It's a lesson I keep com ing back to. Yes, the glitter of Ferrari s and Porsches is alluring, but it's only a dream for 99 per cent of us. There are basically three Camry trim levels, the LE, SE and XLE, and each can be equipped with a 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder producing 157 hp and 163 lb/ft of torque or a 3.0-litre V6 producing 192 hp and 209 lb/ft of torque. Up until this year the sporting SE was V6 equipped. With an upgraded suspension system, it was a delightful handler, but tip-in cost was also a factor. I mentioned holding the line on pricing. There are front and rear splashguards and the interior is upgraded with leather steering wheel and shifter and aluminum trim pieces. There are also fog lamps on the lower front spoiler protected by a plastic covering so all the sand and salt we've been dealing with this winter doesn't get in. You also get standard air conditioning with clean air filter, full-size spare tire (appreciated), 60/40 rear split seat, power windows with drive side auto down, and an AM/FM Stereo with both cassette and CD player. Also worth having at this time of year is an outside tempera ture gauge. There's more, but that gives an idea of the level of equipment that comes with the SE-four. Inside, the amount of room Toyota always seems to hollow out from nowhere remains impressive. If it weren't for the front bucket seals. I'm sure this would seat six. no problem. But what makes it a Toyota is the quality of the mate rials used. The cloth used in the seals, in particular, is about as good as it gets. Another thing about the Camry is how wide the doors are. The driver's door, for instance and the height of the front seat make it possible to walk in and sit down, just like that. None of this ducking the head that makes own ing a swoopily styled sedan an ergonomic nightmare. The back seat door opens almost to 90 degrees, perfect for my son who is starting to turn into a good-sized ado lescent. Even though I drove the SE hard to see if the 'sport ing' pretensions were there. I still only needed two fillups of gas (regular) in my week with the car when my norm is three to four tanks. Transport Canada lists this car at 9.8L/I00 km (29 mpg) city, and 6.5L/100 km (43 mpg) highway. How 'sporting' was it? Well, actu ally not that bad. The car's suspension felt very tight, but with the slush and serious ly cold weather we've been having, pushing the envelope would have been foolish at best. However. I can tell you that hit ting the gas to get up to highway speeds from the on-ramp was pretty good. The clutch was nicely weight ed and the shifter was positive in it's throws if a bit long. The spirit is there, but again because of weather conditions, I tried to keep it cool. As fun as this car might be, it is still a Toyota which means it is built to very high standards as witnessed by the CAA Pyramid Awards men tioned at the top. This year the 19972002 Camry was rated the best used car buy. The CAA found the cost of repairs averaged 27 per cent lower than similar care of similar age. The CAA also found no less than 98 per cent of those surveyed will buy another Camry. People like their Toyotas because they are almost like appliances. They work and work and rarely, if ever, let you down.
