Smith said this is a move he and his wife have been thinking about for a number of years. He also emphasized this is not even remotely close to retire ment for he will be setting up his own studio and gallery in the little town of Union Bay, which is located right on the shores of the Georgia Straights, the body of water between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island. "As a landscape artist you are always looking for new challenges, a new palette and an opportunity to move for ward," Smith said. He and his wife are also looking for ward to the Island lifestyle, which is purported to move at a much slower pace than here in Oakville. However, this could change in the not too distant future as the Comox Valley area is one of the island's fastest growing commu nities. It even has a new Wal-mart, and Future Shop is scheduled to open up a store in March of this year. "Oakville has been good to me and my family," said Smith. "We are really going to miss a lot of the things we have enjoyed, especially getting involved with the community and the people. Oakville is a special community and I hope that with the coming development boom it can maintain its character and sense of closeness to its rural roots." (See `A r t is t . . .' page 24) Peter C.
