By Jason Stein W H EELB A SE COMMUNICATIONS If the new 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL500 were a thoroughbred, its grand father could be Secretariat. The bloodlines are that thick and the racing heritage is that strong. Fifty years ago, the German automaker caused quite a motorsports stir when it unveiled the first 300SL race car. This innovative rocket, with its tubular space frame, gorgeous teardrop-shaped aluminum body and small, upswing doors, captured the hearts (and checkered flags) at the 24hour LeMans (France) endurance race and the famed Carrera Panamericana event in Mexico. Since then, Mercedes-Benz has transformed its race-bred two-seater into a serious luxury cruiser as well as an accomplished driver's car. For 2003, with a nod to the past and an eye to the future, the SL is a technological tour de force thinly disguised with Mercedes' racing-derived heritage. The original 1954 300SL production car was a `gullwing' coupe, but all the SLs that followed were convertibles with removable hardtops. The fifthgeneration 2003 model is actually a blend of both. With the flick of a finger, the SL500 goes from hardtop to ragtop in just 16 seconds. But that's only the start of the car's engineering marvels. The SL comes with Mercedes' industry-first Active Body Control, a semiactive suspension system that pro vides accurate wheel and body posi tioning using two computers, 13 sen sors and four electronically directed hydraulic plungers. It also includes Mercedes' all-new Sensotronic electrohydraulic brake control. Electro what? More simply, brake by wire. Brake by what? Well, when you pump the pedal, you're not squeezing fluid through the brake lines as you would in a conven tional car. Instead, an electric sensor and a computer interpret -- from the force and speed of your foot -- how car. Just keep the card in your wallet and you can unlock the driver's door with a touch of the handle or start the car with a touch of a heat-sensitive pad atop the automatic transmission gear selector. That touch powers up the 302horsepower V8 (the only engine cur rently offered) borrowed from M-B's CL500 and S500 models. Mercedes says it's a shade quicker than before (its zero-to-100-km time is around six sec onds), but that's only part of the fun. The SL500 is fitted with Active Body Control sport mode, which stiffens and lowers the latest version of the double A-arm suspension. On the outside, the SL draws upon its own rich history, taking its styling cues from those classic sports machines of nearly a half-century ago. There are air inlets in the front fenders and at the base of the windshield and a radiator grille set off by Mercedes' famous three-point star. And speaking of fame ... this might be a car ready to fall in with a long line of other SL legends in the MercedesBenz stable. Winners all. AT A GLANCE Two-door, two-passenger, rearwhcel-drive roadster. 5.0-litre SOHC 24-valve V8 pro duces 302 horsepower. Q A five-speed automatic is the only transmission option. The all-new-for-2003 SL500 is redesigned from the inside-out. The shape has been rounded and the under pinnings have been upgraded with indus try-first technology. The SL comes with a one-button retracting hardtop, like the SLK. The top is sectioned into four pieces that lake 16 seconds to stack themselves inside the trunk. A Bosch electro-hydraulic brakeby-w ire system puts a com puter in charge o f the brake pedal to enhance safety and performance. An Active Body Control System , first seen on the redesigned CL coupe, has been added to the SL lineup. Drivers can select from touring or sport modes, which alters ride height and roll stiffness. Stopping power is applied to each wheel differently, depending on trac tion. In wet weather the system goes so far as to squeegee water off the brake discs by applying short impulses to the pads. There's even a purely hydraulic backup for the front wheels if electron ics should fail. Speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering allows the SL to munch away at comers while your right foot mashes the gas pedal. With all this eye-popping technolo gy, it's easy to forget about the power, the styling prowess or the driving, which begins with a turn of a key, or a touch of the car if you're using Mercedes' optional Keyless Go system.
