Handel's newly-discovered masterwork, Gloria for solo soprano and string orchestra, is a brilliant eightmovement virtuoso composi tion. a showpiece for singer in which heartfelt expression alternates with vocal fire works. It was written during the composer's early period in Rome (circa 1707), and its high-technical challenges are very much in keeping with such other youthful sacred works as his great choral masterpiece Dixit Dominus. Amazingly, the work remained unknown for 250 years after Handel's death, until the very exciting and recent rediscovery of its manuscript among the vast archives of the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. This was the result of an amazing piece of detective work by Professor Dr. Hans Joachim Marx of Hamburg. The existence of Gloria had been known to some scholars - in name and title only - for over 20 years. Acting on a hunch, the resolute Marx travelled to London and began a per sonal search through the Royal Academy library, which comprises no fewer than 150,000 manuscripts, before making the finest Baroque discovery of our generation. So why was this jewel ever lost in the first place.? Normally, Handel was a very thorough librarian of his own compositions, but this one somehow slipped through the net. However, one copy of Gloria was kept as part of a collection by William Savage, a singer and friend of Handel, who bequeathed it to a pupil, R. J. S. Stevens, who in turn bequeathed it to the acade my in the 19th century. Through this chain of connections, the work remained unknown and out of circulation. At the local concert, this work by one o f the all-tim e m aster com posers for the hum an voice, will be sung by O berm eyer, whose sub lime artistry is perfectly matched to the beauties and scope o f this newlydiscovered gem. To match the splendor of this event, the excellent choir of St. Jude's Church will give only the third Canadian performance of Handel's Dettingen Anthem , as well as three of his great Coronation Anthems, accompanied by a festive orchestra. # 1 P iz a u v f To join our delivery team call 905-845-9742 Internet access that's twice as fast as high speed phone.
