Some will walk in the name of a friend, some a co-worker. Others will be walking in the memory of a spouse, child, par ent, sibling or someone else who was precious to them. Walk to Remember will be held from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. to raise funds for Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO) Halton-Peel, plus other charities. The Walk begins with regis tration at Centennial Square in front of the Oakville Central Library at .Navy Street and Lakeshore Road. Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors, The Walk to Remember will conclude with a Community Appreciation Branch at Lakeside Park over looking Oakville Harbour. Participants can enjoy a catered continental brunch, entertain ment and prizes. A new Donor Recognition Wall will also be unveiled. The Walk to Remember is open to the entire community, and walkers can choose simply to make a donation to Bereaved Families of Ontario or to gather pledges. By gathering pledges, walk ers can also help charities that were meaningful to a lost loved one. Up to 40 per cent of a walk ers' pledges can be designated to any other charity in memory of the person in whose name they are walking; the rest will be used to support Bereaved Families programs in Halton- Peel. Bereaved Families provides support groups for bereaved children, young people and par ents in Halton and Peel. No one is ever prepared for tragedy. Yet, every year in this area, hundreds of children and parents die prematurely, leaving a terrible, traumatic absence in the lives of their families. The impact on the family is devastat ing. "Extended families and friends who haven't been through a similar loss usually don't have the understanding or skills that are most needed by those who are bereaved. "Frequently people are too worried about upsetting the child or parent to allow them to express their grief," says Wendy Dean, Executive Director of BFO Halton-Peel. Bereaved Families of Ontario - Halton-Peel's support makes a critical difference in the lives of those who have experienced a family tragedy. More than 99 per cent of Bereaved Families' participants evaluate the programs as having decreased isolation, increased hope and provided a network of support to help them cope and re-build. The impact is broad reaching. BFO Halton-Peel reached more than 4,000 people a year, including approximately 160 who are supported by an inten sive, life-changing 12-week sup port program. Wizard of Hope Walk for Schizophrenia on May 25 A heightened awareness of the devastating effects of schizo phrenia was created when the movie, A Beautiful Mind won four Oscars tfcis year. The 2001 movie - based on a true story, starring Russell Crowe, and directed by Ron Howard - deals with the effects of this mental illness. "Movie goers were deeply touched and became more aware of the effects of this devastating disease and the wonderful results that could be achieved if it was controlled," says Marjorie Hazelton of the Oakville Chapter of the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario (SSO). "Most families are touched by mental illness in some way be it big or small," she continues."It requires a great deal of awareness to educate the pub lic." Oakville's SSO chapter is organizing its second annual Wizard of Hope Walk for Schizophrenia and Mental Illness - based on the theme from another movie classic The Wizard o f Oz, on May 25. Last year's event raised $16,000, the largest amount ever raised by the local chapter from a walk. The funds were donated to the Bill Jefferies Schizo phrenia Endowment Fund, which funds research. The late Bill Jefferies is cred ited with raising awareness of schizophrenia and founded the Schizophrenia Society world wide. Each year, all funds raised from the annual Wizard of Hope Walk goes to the Bill Jefferies Schizophrenia Endowment Fund. This year's walk will begin with registration at Oakville Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., at 11 a.m. Participants may come dressed in their best costumes and walk with `The Wizard.' The walk will officially open at noon, with walkers leaving Town Hall at 12:20 p.m., south on Trafalgar Road to Oakville Place for a closing ceremony and free lunch at 2 p.m. Prizes will be given for most money raised, highest number of donations and best costumes.
