In consultation with Heritage Oakville and an Oakville Town council-approved heritage permit, the owners of the Falgarwood Drive home rebuilt the garage using the original brick, doors and other materials to bring it back to life. Some Heritage Oakville members received a personal tour from the 77-year-old homeowner to see the completed $30,000 project. House built in 1857 He said it was important to him and his wife, Brenda, to keep the historic nature of the house built in 1857. While the garage was recently being overrun by grass, history suggests it was a summer kitchen for a farming family before Charters moved in. Carolyn Van Sligtenhorst, a heritage planner with the Town of Oakville, said the Charters went "above and beyond" to retain the original elements of the garage, which included an interior door, a kitchen pantry and wainscoting. She said they didn't have to restore the interior to its historic appearance, but in doing so, showed amazing "commitment to the restoration of this significant heritage property." Heritage Oakville is a municipal advisory committee that reviews and makes recommendations on planning and development applications for heritage properties.
