This Friday, at Ice Sports Oakville, beginning at 7:15 p.m.. they will be playing in their version o f the Stanley Cup playoffs. With their backs against the wall, the Ice Bears, tech nically from M ississauga, have decided to play the biggest game o f their season back in Oakville where they have been regular patrons over the years, including their regular season finale, here, earlier this month. They have quite the Oakville connection to begin with. The team owner. Bill M etcalfe, is from Oakville and is well known in both the business and hockey com munity. Also from Oakville are head coach Steve Blundy and assistant coach Gary Carr. Oakville MPP and house speaker. The Ice Bears have one Olympian on their team -- Therese Brisson. And the Oakville Beaver interviewed her about her Olympic experiences prior to the Ice Bears' regular season finale earlier this month which they won 6-0 over Durham Telus. The Ice Bears' opponents this Friday are the Beatrice Aeros who recently distinguished themselves by making it to the national cham pionships where they lost a close 1-0 game to the Quebec representative. The Aeros have have four Olympians in their fold -- Becky Kellar. Cheryl Pounder. Geraldine Heaney and Cherie Piper. The two teams actually kicked off their best-of-three National W omen's Hockey League (NW HL) cham pi onship series on Monday night with the Ice Bears losing a 5-4 heartbreaker in overtime, unable to hold on to a 3-1 lead in the third period. "They (Beatrice Aeros) really came on strong and tied it up," said Metcalfe. "And with two minutes left in the overtime period, they scored." But he said the Ice Bears "played a wonderful game. It's just the way it went. It could have went either way." Therese Brisson of the Ice Bears will face off against four fellow Olympic gold medalists Friday night at Ice Sports. And saying his players are not at all intimidated by the Aeros' gold m edal-rich roster, he said there should be more Fireworks Friday night. "T here's no rabbit you can pull out of your hat." he said. "You have to play them a certain way. The Aeros are a very explosive team, they have a lot o f talent. "Our talent is there, but we have young talent, inexpe rienced. So we have to play them a certain way so they don't explode on you." The Ice Bears will be going all out to extend the series to a rubber match, which would be hosted by the Beatrice Aeros on Monday.
