The Oakville Beaver. W ednesday A pril 24, 2002 - D 5 Marathon program kicks off Saturday Non-runners and couch potatoes can successfully run a marathon according to Canada Fit. which is comprised of Toronto Fit, Mississauga Fit. and Oakville Fit. The only skill needed is the desire to live healthier, feel great and have fun while doing so. These goals are attainable through Oakville Fit, a moti vational 26-week running/walking training program designed to get individuals in the best shape of their lives, quickly and safely with lots of fun and support. Registration begins this Saturday (April 27) at Glen Abbey United Church on 1469 Nottinghill Gate. Canada Fit boasts a 100 per cent success rate for mem bers crossing the finish line. The training program is modeled after U SA Fit. winner of the national Runner's World `Golden Shoe Award' for the Houston version of the program. With a few hours a week, training over a six-month peri od. virtually any person, regardless of age or current fitness level can train to finish a marathon. The program trains runners and walkers of all ability levels through tailored coaching, including beginners and non-runnersAvalkers, to finish a marathon or a half marathon. Participants meet on Saturday mornings for training runs and seminars on training techniques, running form, injury prevention and treatment, cross training, speed training, flexibility and other educational topics. "Canada Fit is a non-competitive training environ ment...Anyone who wants to have fun while getting in great shape should sign up. whether you classify yourself as a beginning runner, aerobicizer. in-line skater, cyclist, swim mer, or even a couch potato", said Rikki McCarthy. National Coordinator for Canada Fit. Participants receive a training schedule that is geared to their specific ability level and are guided by a coach who work with them continually throughout the program. Runners can easily train on their own during the week by following the training schedule and in group runs on the weekends with their fellow Oakville Fit members. Not only does the program help members achieve their personal fitness goals, it also raises money for charity. Last year, runners collected pledges and raised $90,000 for The Magic Castle, a daycare program for children whose parents are receiving cancer treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital. Funds raised this year w ill support the new Palliative Care Unit and the Psychosocial Program at Princess Margaret Hospital. Canada Fit. the parent organization, launched Toronto Fit and Oakville Fit five years ago and successfully added Mississauga Fit to its roster last year. Members from all three programs w ill target their training to complete a full or a half marathon. The fee for the 26-week training program includes all training schedules, coaching, seminars and group runs. The benefits he said extend beyond the con venience to the club's competitors and to the prestige it brings to the club. The club, he said, encourages both its recreational and its up and coming competitive athletes to come out. "They get to watch some of the provincial level athletes do their stuff, you can kind of see their wide eyed expres sion and loose jaw expression and I think that's what really motivates them to move up and become a provincial ath lete." The club has seen a huge growth in the number of boys that are now involved in the gymnastics program, to the point where they're about 25 per cent of the club member ship. And in recognition of this. Hussey said the club hopes to soon bring the boys provincial championship to Oakville. Head coach Andrew Deslippe said he wouldn't be sur prised to see an Oakville competitor end up on the podium this weekend. "The potential is definitely there for all four of them."
