www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, July 30, 2014 | 4 Local groups get Trillium grants The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is investing in 33 non-profit and charitable organizations in Halton and Peel regions as part of the province-wide Trillium grants program. "Our support for innovative local initiatives builds healthy and vibrant communities across the province that enrich the quality of life for all in Ontario," said Michael Coteau, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport in a media release Monday. The OTF , Canada's largest granting foundation, said 298 community grants had been awarded, including 27 in support of provincewide projects. They include a range of fields such as social services, sports and recreation, the environment and arts and culture. · Oakvillegreen Conservation Association received almost $135,000 over two years to hire two new part-time staff to expand community-based environmental programs. · Community Living Oakville (CLO) is getting $47,000 over three years to develop a self-advocates group for those with a developmental disability. · The 1188 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps will use $48,600 to purchase recreation equipment. · Community Youth in Action Network (CYAN) will put $108,100 to hiring staff to develop and deliver programming for youths in Oakville and Halton. · Food for Life, which serves all of Halton, will spend $15,000 over six months to improve its Burlington facility so it can be used year-round by clients, volunteers, staff and partner organizations. · The Halton Multicultural Council (HMC) will get $150,000 over two years to lead a collaborative initiative in which the HMC and five other organizations will work with a consulting team to strengthen its infrastructure to become more financially sustainable. · Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre will have $87,000 to turn its second-floor attic into a shared office and activity area for organizations in north Oakville. · The Wai Nui Outrigger Canoe Club will purchase boating equipment and expand its programming with the $82,000 it was awarded over two years. · Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation will have $65,000 to upgrade technological infrastructure at three centres in Oakville and Toronto. "These grants will help community groups provide more and better services, and I'm pleased to be part of the team at OTF that is supporting this important work," said Gayle Wadden, OTF Grant Review Team chair for Halton and Peel. The OTF is a provincial agency that awards upwards of 1,300 grants every year. More than one in five organizations that receive OTF grants are run solely by volunteers.
