McIntosh recorded five loose balls in final continued from p.18 with Canada at the 2012 World Under-19 Lacrosse Championships. "Not many people get that opportunity and to be on one of those teams and contribute in the final, I just think, `Wow, that was amazing.'" Being a late replacement and missing most of the team's pre-tournament preparations, McIntosh had no expectations of how much playing time he would see. But he didn't look like a spare part when the tournament began. He scored to give Canada a 4-2 lead in a 12-6 semifinal win over the Iroquois Nationals in the semifinals and then shared the team lead with five ground balls in the final. He finished the tournament with three goals, three assists and 17 loose balls in seven games. "I just needed to find my role and I played more as a transition midfielder," McIntosh said. "Playing more defence and pushing the pace between the lines." Canada squandered a 3-0 lead in a 10-7 opening-game loss against the U.S., but, anticipating a rematch later on -- the teams have met in the last five finals -- Canada didn't show the Americans everything it had planned. Canada gained momentum throughout the tournament, winning its next five games to set up the second chance it had hoped for. In the final, the Canadian coaches identified some weaknesses in the U.S. game and defensively Canada keyed on the Americans' top two players. The adjustments paid off as Canada built an 8-2 lead, an advantage that proved to be too much for the Americans to overcome. "It was pretty cool," McIntosh, the 2013 National Lacrosse Lacrosse transition player of the year, said. "To go from not being on the team, to winning a world championship, it was an amazing feeling. Coming home and seeing all the messages on Twitter and Facebook and Instagram from family and friends and random Canadians -- even the PM was tweeting about us -- that was pretty incredible." 19 | Friday, July 25, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Brendan Donville (above) and Jordan McIntosh were part of the Canadian team that won gold at the world lacrosse championships. | Donville photo by Britany Gordon, Canadian Lacrosse Association; McIntosh photo by Scott McCall, U.S. Lacrosse Minor peewee A's prepare for Cooperstown tournament with title win in Brampton The Oakville A's minor peewee AAA team got a nice confidence boost as it prepared to play in an invitational baseball tournament this month in Cooperstown, N.Y. Oakville rebounded from an opening-game loss at the recent Brampton Royals tournament, winning its next four contests to claim the championship. The A's used solid pitching, timely hitting and nearly error-free defence to win their final three games by a combined score of 33-4, including a 7-2 win over Brampton -- the team that beat Oakville in its opening game -- in the final. Oakville's other wins came over Vaughan (6-5), Scarborough (14-2) and London (12-0). In Cooperstown, the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, the A's were to face teams from New Jersey, New York and Georgia in the preliminary round of the tournament at Dreams Park.
