Soccer player to train in United Kingdom Oakville resident Matthew Wilson will play soccer at United Kingdom's Oakland College next year as he pursues his dream of a professional soccer career. The 17-year-old played last summer for the Oakville Soccer Club and currently attends the Blyth Academy advanced sports training school in Burlington. This past winter, Wilson trained with Hamilton's FC Shalke professional development program, and he'll play for Schalke this summer in the Hamilton & District Soccer Association's men's league. Wilson is one of three players from Schalke who will start the 2014-15 campaign in Europe. Dundas resident Keani Fairbanks, also 17, will join Wilson at Oaklands. Nineteenyear-old Martin Kowalski of Hamilton Mountain has been offered a position as a striker with a Polish Second Division team. All three boys had multiple trials in Europe this spring before making their decision. "Here in Canada, we tend to think that European players are far superior to our boys, but that is not true," said Schalke coach Leo Charalampis. "Given the opportunity to play on the same team as Europeans, they quickly realize they can compete with players of their own age. After that, it's just a matter of finding the right fit in terms of coaching philosophy and playing style." 41 | Thursday, June 5, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com (5 and 6 year olds, 2008/2009 birth years for 2014/15 season) MINOR OAKS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INITIATION PROGRAM STARTING THIS FALL OFFERING 2 SEASONS Fall October 19-December 21/14, Evaluation Skate October 19, Gala Day December 21 Winter January 4-March 8/15, Evaluation Skate January 4, Gala Day March 8 Mountain-biking presentation Monday in Oakville Mountain-biking enthusiasts will have the opportunity to learn about one of the sport's most gruelling rides Monday at Cyclepath Oakville.
