Oakville's Classick wins an Independent Music Award by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Artscene 17 | Wednesday, June 18, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Connected to your Community" Oakville band Classick is hitting its stride. On the heels of having its song This Heart featured in the opening montage of Hockey Night In Canada's broadcast earlier this year, the guys -- Morgan Clamp, Kyle Hosick and Peter Wilhoit -- are once again in the spotlight having recently received a 2014 Independent Music Award (IMA) for Best Rock/Hard Rock Song. Hosick, the guitarist for the group, told the Oakville Beaver the band is honoured to receive the recognition, especially from notable judges that included Nancy and Ann Wilson of Heart, Suzanne Vega, Sharon Jone and Terry McBride. "We're big fans of Heart and for them to pick our song is really all we can hope for," he said. "...This is proving to be a good year so far and it's only half way through." Hosick, a White Oaks Secondary School graduate, added the band is now among notable past IMA winners like Passenger, The Trews, The Mahones, Ben Kweller and Fun. "We're in pretty good company and we're The Oakville band Classick, which includes, from left, Kyle Hosick, Morgan Clamp and Peter Wilhoit, has won a 2014 Independent Music Award (IMA) for Best Rock/Hard Rock Song. | submitted photo the little engine that could from Oakville," he said. Hosick added he hopes this new accolade will help further their careers as musicians. Classick, formerly known as Bodies, has been together since the mid-90s performing and creating songs. It has performed at past Waterfront Festivals and other venues across Oakville and more recently formed its own independent label, White Oaks Records. The group's music style is influenced by bands from the 1970s and 1980s, everyone from ACDC to U2. Classick made the Top 50 of the Song Quest, which received nearly 1,000 entries from across Canada. Over the coming months, Hosick said he and his bandmates will be releasing two new songs. They'll also release a full-length album later -- a little unconventional, but as Hosick points out, something musicians are doing more and more. "The music industry is so different these days. Some people cross their fingers for a record deal that is not on the horizon, but all it takes is one right person to think, `I'll listen to this track and I like this,'" he said. Hosick hopes with an IMA under their belt, he and his bandmates can leverage more exposure in mainstream media. The IMAs is an international program that honours top-ranked independent artists and provides winners with opportunities that will place them in front of the music industry and fans worldwide.
