The Oshawa Generals sniper, who turned 17 last week, recorded three goals and five assists during the opening weekend of action to nab the first OHL player-of-theweek honours of the season. The player of the year in both the OHL and Canadian Hockey League last season, Tavares had a goal and three assists in the Generals' 7-3 win over Sudbury Friday. He followed that up with two goals and two helpers Saturday versus Belleville, helping Oshawa to a 5-3 victory. Stefan Legein, who recently attended the Columbus Blue Jackets' training camp, has also started the OHL season well. The 18-year-old forward had a goal and two assists to lead the Niagara IceDogs to a 4-1 win over the Mississauga Majors Friday, then earned a goal and an assist in Niagara's 5-4 loss to the Brampton Battalion Sunday. Eleven different players have scored goals thus far, while six are tied for the team lead with two markers apiece. Julian Cimadamore led the way Friday against the Derbys, scoring twice. Adding singles were Luke Moodie and Chris Corbeil. Kyle Traynor earned three assists and Chris Haltigin contributed two helpers. Saturday in Mississauga, Kellan Lain paced the Blades' offence with a goal and two assists. Domenic Mondardo, Nick McParland and Moodie also tallied. Sean Teakle had the lone Oakville goal in the Sunday loss to St. Michael's, which was part of the Governor's Showcase Weekend in Mississauga. The Blades will be tested in their next three games, as they have back-to-back contests against the Brampton Capitals and a match in Hamilton. Both the Capitals and Red Wings are expected to finish near the top of the West Conference standings this season. Coccimiglio won't put any extra emphasis on the upcoming games, however, well aware that all but one team in the West (the 0-6 Buffalo Jr. Sabres) has a .500 record or better in the early going. "Right now in this league, every game is a big game," he said. "If you fall behind in the standings, it will be hard to catch up." Oakville visits Brampton tomorrow, then hosts the Capitals Friday at Joshua Creek Arenas (a 7:30 p.m. start). The Blades will travel to Hamilton Monday. NOTES: Haltigin, a defenceman, leads Oakville scorers with six points in five games. Corbeil is second with five, while four players have four points apiece... The Blades signed two more defencemen recently, Jeff Grenier and Kirk Evely. Grenier, born in 1987, won the RBC Royal Bank Cup with the Aurora Tigers last season and is a reliable defender that moves the puck well, Coccimiglio said. Evely, born in 1991, is a hard-working player that is calm and patient in his own zone, according to the Blades' coach.
