www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 30, 2014 | 14 Sheridan College to benefit when old post office is leased by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff The former downtown Oakville post office building, now owned by the Town of Oakville, may get a new tenant in the fall. The Town's CAO and solicitor have a green light from council to carry out a lease agreement with a private digital media company looking to set up shop at the 193 Church St. building that has been vacant since April 2012. The company plans on hiring about 60 graduating students from Sheridan and Seneca colleges' digital media programs in September, Town Economic Development Director Dorothy St. George told councillors Monday. Sheridan College faculty would also be contracted for training purposes and the company plans to build out to 300 employees over a period of two years, she continued. "The company has very ambitious goals. They're excited about being downtown," said St. George, explaining the opportunity would be "great" for the Town's economic development strategy as it aligns closely with it targeting the digital media and animation cluster. "This opportunity is a wonderful partnership for Sheridan College," she said. "The college will not only provide the staff, but also training for the staff going in there alongside the company's own team to train the new hires on proprietary technology." St. George said it could also inject some muchneeded stimulus to the economic environment of downtown Oakville. "While it sits vacant, this is a great opportunity to fill it with people who will be shopping downtown, who will be working and meeting in the streets and using the restaurants and shops," she said. The former post office was purchased for $11 million by the Town in April 2012. It's one of the Town-owned facilities currently under review in the Downtown Cultural Hub study. However, St. George said there are no short- term plans for at least the next five year for the facility. Meanwhile, Sheridan College President and CEO Dr. Jeff Zabudsky said the school is excited about the prospect of a leading digital media company "laying down roots in downtown Oakville. "It's a testament to Sheridan's stellar reputation in animation, film and television education that they are choosing to locate where the talent pool is strong, and this represents a great opportunity for our graduates," he said. "It will also strengthen Oakville's growing status as a digital media hub, while bringing new vibrancy to the downtown core."
