A downnpour didn't stop a group of Oakville residents from coming together at Towne Square Wednesday evening to hold a vigil for nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls who were kidnapped on April 14. The gathering of about 30 people, was organized by Pam Damoff, Oakville Ward 2 councillor, who emphasized she was not holding it as a public official, but as a mother and someone deeply troubled by what has happened to the young women. Nearly a month ago, Boko Haram insurgents kidnapped 276 schoolgirls from their dormitories in Chibok, Nigeria. Initially, the militants said the girls would be sold, but now appear to be trying to use some as bargaining chips to secure the release of imprisoned comrades. The mass abduction shocked and horrified people around the world, including Oakville residents. Those who attended the rally know the "act of trying to prevent girls from receiving an education is not new," said Damoff, earlier this week. "As a mom, I just can't imagine having a child kidnapped and threatened with being sold into slavery for the only reason that they wanted to get an education. It's inconceivable. It just troubled me so much and I wanted to do something." Helping orgnanize Wednesday's rally was Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN) and the Peace and Justice Club at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. Those at the vigil sought to raise awareness and called on the federal government to assist the international community in finding the girls. Canada has provided the Nigerian government with surveillance equipment to be used in the search for the abducted girls. The equipment was provided on the condition that only Canadians operate it, according to rally organizers. Those present are hopeful events like the one that took place in Oakville will add to the international outcry -- pressuring those in power to work towards finding the girls and returning them home. "I looked at the girls' faces (in a recently released terrorist video) and I wonder what has happened to them see Rally on p.7
