Mayor says Hudak's Million Jobs Plan plan needs to be clear by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Friday, May 16, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Ontario's Progressive Conservative (PC) Leader Tim Hudak is drawing some sharp criticism from opponents and even Oakville Mayor Rob Burton on his Million Jobs Plan. Hudak's full platform was released Wednesday, outlining 21 action items aimed at creating one million jobs over the next eight years. The plan, that includes eliminating Ontario's $12.5-billion a year deficit, backs Hudak's public statements that the Ontario PC Party's plan includes freezing the wages of public sec- inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com tor workers for two years and cutting 100,000 public service jobs or 10 per cent of Ontario's public service. While Hudak maintains those cuts won't affect frontline services performed by nurses, doctors and police, Oakville's mayor says more details are needed. When contacted about the potential impact on the Town of Oakville, Burton told the Oakville Beaver Wednesday he's concerned it Calling it a "Tea Party" program, Burton said he believes the only public gain he can could tip the province into a recession. "It's the funniest way I've seen, the strangest see is that Ontario's budget would be balanced and cruelest way I've ever seen, trying to create a year ahead of schedule. "I don't know if ending the deficit one year jobs by starting off to kill a bunch," he said. early is worth the pain, upset and disruption," he said. "... As a mayor I look at this so-called budget plan and I say, I can't support this. This Holland Park Garden Lobo looks like way too much pain for next-to-no Mark's Work Wearhouse Oakville Marketplace gain." Burton, who also sits on Halton Regional Council, noted part of the strategy could directly impact Oakville and surrounding municipalities. "We have about 1,050 municipality of Halton employees, who deliver public health and social services and if 10 per cent of them or 105 were deleted, it would be very hard for us to continue to deliver those services to the folks who need them," said Burton. The mayor noted Ontario Public Service employees help provide vital services that people depend on. He said Hudak has mentioned he won't be reducing nurses or doctors and if that's the case, Burton said he expects the cuts would shift to other health and social services offered. Hudak hasn't been clear enough yet on who exactly would be affected, said Burton. 6 23 Artscene Classified 20 31 Dr. Green Services New Homes Stone-Link Corp.
