www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 8, 2014 | 10 Beer Store bottle drive to fight cancer Gather up those empties, folks. On Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, The Beer Store locations in Halton and across the province will hold a bottle drive in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Beer, wine and spirit empties will be collected with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the society. This marks the ninth annual such fundraiser, with roughly $7.8 million having been collected since 2005 for research into blood cancers and support for patients and their families. This year's goal is to collect 250,000, with an average of 560 at 449 The Beer Store locations. The campaign is a joint initiative between the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 12R24 (UFCW), which represents 6,000 Beer Store employees, The Beer Store and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC). According to the LLSC, there are more than 100,000 people living with, or in remission from, a blood cancer in Canada -- 18,600 Canadian were diagnosed with a blood cancer in 2013. Approximately $7.8 million has been raised for the cause since the drive's inception in 2006. Beer Store locations will also be accepting cash donations or $1 can be added to a purchase as a donation to the bottle drive throughout May. For more information, visit www.bottledrive.ca. Wed.
