continued from p.1 Around 7:15 p.m. Monday, the boy had finished dinner with his family at his Pine Glen Road home and went to the garage to get his bicycle. After punching in the passcode on the external keypad, it is believed the boy's hoodie got caught in the external mechanism on the garage door. "What appears to have happened is that as the garage door started going up he ducked to go underneath, rather than wait for it to be fully up," explained Sgt. Chantal Corner, Halton police media relations. "The handle caught the back of his hoodie and that's what brought him up." Corner said someone who was driving by saw the boy was in trouble. The individual got out of the car and helped him while a second person alerted his parents who were inside the home. It is not clear how long the youngster was ensnared before help arrived. However, those at the scene performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until an ambulance arrived, police said. The boy was transported to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and then redirected to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children in critical condition. Jack was still said to be in critical condition, with his family by his side, throughout the day Tuesday. By Wednesday morning police said he was off life support and expected to make a full recovery. Police reported the boy's family said he was News of boy's recovery welcomed by friends and community communicating with his parents and even joking with his nurses, having regained his familiar sense of humour. Corner said police are looking at the possibility of nominating the people who came to the boy's rescue for a citizenship award next year. Denton said the principal at the boy's school and his teacher provided his classmates with updates on the student's condition. Police said an investigation has revealed nothing suspicious surrounding the accident. Len Dubowitz, owner of Dobbs Garage Door Systems, said he's never heard of an incident like this in his 27 years in the business. The biggest danger involves the closing of garage doors, which can apply as much as 400 pounds of pressure, he said. As a result, most motorized units, built in the last decade, have sensors that stop the door if something gets in the way. Many doors also have mechanisms that will halt movement if the door senses weight, such as someone pulling on it. However, the level that would cause the motor to shut off varies, said Dubowitz.
