Byron worth $5 American People, 4 - I It ilior women to wake up toa keener sense of their importance as, a political power. They demand-that is some oi them --the use oi the franchise in parliamentary as in municipal elections, and yet they do not use all the power they now possess, or ii they did there would be a greater manifesta- tlon of it in passing events. It is for them to see that they are not ignored in the pre- paration oi the voters lists. and that the council makes ample provision ior a -lling and unrestrained expression of their opinion at the polls. It is let them to go iurther. to follow the example of the women oi Eng- land. to become more aggressive than ever in regard to moral reforms. to math their action representativeo! their sex generally than of a few individuals, and to show by their personality the power which they can. if they will, exercise. Encli woman cnndilute in some form emphasized the clue of interest: she would look after. Among othors were named _"suporvising industrial schools, re iormatories. and lunatic asylume. carrying out the act for protecting infants farmed out to nurae, getting proper and sanitary dwell- ing: for the working claues, underground telegraph wires," etc. They would look after -hilc1ren in industrial achools, and pen- per and lunatic women who require special attention !r_om women. Great interest centres in the election of several women to the London county coun- cil, and to the inuence these will be able to exert in public affairs. It is rumoured in some of the political journals that an etlurt will be -made to unseat them, or to prevent them from acting as members of the county board. This suggestion is met. however, hy the announcement that the women meml;ers~ eleet will not surrender their seats and will de`end. at every stage and in ererv manner, the rights they -`laim to have been awarded at the hands of the electors. And they mean just what they say. They are backed by the intelligence of the nation, and by an organization of wealthy women at the head of which is the tknilitess of Aberdeen. The opposition to them is purely political. The lesdersiuthe members-electand their friends. including Mrs. Hlamlstone. are liberals, and the idea is to worn them into retire ment if possible. The idea is to do niore than this : it is to break the force of the women s movemt-nt,now such a power in the land, as one may easily infer when it is stated that at the recent municipal elections as many as `2,0()0,U0() women were registered and voted. Writing of this matter to the Women'.v Journal Mrs. Lucy Stone says : |.`_..|:-|. ._...--.__. 1.....- L x :._n : . um I ('lil. 10 .411). Aiftho next meeting of the council ap- plication will be umdo to the city council l for assistance to the Midland agricultural association in the wg.)!.4z-stock to the extent of say $10,000. The matter has been con- templated for some time, and been dis- cussed by some of the aldermen, with the growing conviction that in some way the fair shou'd be liberally assisted. It is an-`.. institution of the city and is assnr`(V(lly do- siuned to benet the city. It is safe to say that some of its heaviest stockholders were intlnenced by a public rather than private spirit when they lmcanio id eutitied with the association. They felt that the annual re- recurring exhibition of arts and manufac- tures, products of the garden, the farm and the daily, was II distinguished characteristic of every live and progressive community, and they have done what they could to make that exhibition is success. Now pri- vate enterprise has gone about as far` as it can be reasonably expected to go. The time for action on the part of the corpor- ettion has set in. It is for our aldermen, representing all classes in the eoimmnuity, to do something handsome in II contribu- tiontothe fair. They have seen alrualy what the cities and towns east and west have done under similar circumstances. It is not hoped they will go as far as Toronto and London, whose corporations own the grounds, improve them from BEISOD` to sea- son, and permit the fair association to oc- cupy them free of rental, but it is hoped the council will do About us well as that of Ottawn which spent last year $l.'l,Ul)0on behalf of its exhibition and has before it now plans sudostimstes for buildings to cost 7,500 more.
