Sir Henri Joly has been speaking in Montreal, in the provincial campaign, now closed, and he has revived a chapter in Quebec's political history of the greatest interest. He dealt with his experience as premier of Quebec, and the part Hon. Mr. Flynn took in betraying him. Mr. Flynn was elected as a supporter of Sir Henri and throughout the session of l878 had helped to maintain the government though its existence depended upon the vote of the speaker. Twenty-two motions of son- confidence had been rejected, and then the conservatives turned to the legislative council in which they had a majority. A dead-loch ensued. between the assembly and the council, in consequence of which an adjournment occurred. Hon. Mr. Cbanveau, provincial secretary, then re- signed. and the office was tendered to Mr. Flynn. That gentleman hesitated, then declined, and eleven days afterwards cast in his lot with the conservatives. Nor was he contented to vote against the men he had been elected to support; he seconded the motion of Mr. Lynch, which led to the defeat of the government. The certi- cate of character which Sir Henri gave to Mr. Flynn. as a liberal of inde- pendent ways, yet professing loyalty to his leader,-the certicate that had been used to further his cause in the recent cnmpaign--Sir Henri now withdrew. be- cause it was. he said, obtained under false pretencee. and was being used as it should not be. The provincial campaign ends to-day, and if the Flynn government is not defeated and by a substantial ma- jority all the signs of the times will have been misunderstood. That one who has been so selsh, so ready to sell himself for a mass of pottage. should be rebuffed now is what most men desire. Whatever may be at fault in the land, whoever may fail to rise to the nuponeibilitiee of power and example, the church and its people are expected to be alert and active and aggreeaive. ,So it comes with startling effect that the eynod of Manitoba, (Anglican church), at in session on Saturday voted againet the plebiscite.
