The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 20, 2002 - A 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Planning policy doesn't have to be fuzzy Once in a while, one comes across a clear policy statement, which is quite refreshing after reading all this fuzzy language in the Town o f Oakville's Official Plan Amendment 198. In the Provincial Policies it reads: It is the policy of the Province of Ontario that: 1.1 Developing Strong C om munities: 1.1.1(f) Development and land use patterns which may cause environmental or public health and safety concerns will be avoided. The experts, who wrote Oakville's Official Plan amendment, can learn something from this simple, clear and unambiguous statement, which pro vides protection of the Natural Heritage System, the Buttonbush Swamp, the Trafalgar Moraine and maybe even more lands north of Dundas as well as air quality and traffic safety. I would like to suggest that those experts. Town staff and council make multiple copies of this policy statement and paste it to their bathroom mirrors, their cereal boxes, their refrigerator doors, their car dashboards, the inside lids of their briefcases, the walls in front o f their desks and the back o f their nameplates in the council chamber as a constant reminder of the clear mandate given to them by the Province in refer ence to the future development in the Town of Oakville. I think this is one policy the resi dents, their children and grandchildren would happily live with. HANK RODENBURG H a iio n L inen O u t l e t - Attentionl Attention! Buttonbush swamp proof wetlands need protection The good news from the Ministry o f Natural Resources regarding the signif icance o f the Buttonbush Swamp in north Oakville was tempered by the fact that 1.5 hectares of the wetland had recently been filled. How is it possible that almost half o f a 3.5 hectare wetland supporting six locally rare species could be filled, just like that? Is this incident not more reason to get a strong OPA 198 with iron-clad protection for our natural areas, to ensure that this type o f incident will not happen again? While Town staff continue to "pat us on our head" and tell us not to worry, it appears that our wetlands are being filled and our wildlife is being destroyed. What can we do? We can come on Feb. 20 to hear Glenn De Baeremaeker share with us his experiences regarding the Oak Ridges Moraine and we can attend the council meeting on Feb. 25 at 7:30 pm and make our concerns known. Guardian angels praised On Jan. 10 at around 4 p.m., we were involved in a car accident on Trafalgar Rd. and Cornwall Dr. We wish to sincerely thank every one who went out o f their way to help us -- the police officers, firefighters, ambulance attendants and especially two young ladies who waited with us until the ambulance arrived. We believe that one of the young ladies was named Tracy, but we did not catch the other name. Also thanks to all the staff at the Oakville hospital for their special care and to all our friends and neighbours for their numerous phone calls and help. On our trip to hell and back, you were our guardian angels. God Bless.
