The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday February 20, 2002 - C5 Community Foundation of Oakville funds bereavement program in high schools By C. J. Standing in front of White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS), Bereaved Fam ilies o f O ntario (BFO) H alton/Peel's Wendy Dean thanks Megan Campbell of the Community Foundation o f Oakville for approving a grant for $5,500 towards programs for Adolescent Bereavement Support in High Schools. "The project addresses an important need, and was enthusiastically received by our grants committee," says Campbell. Last spring, WOSS became the first school in Oakville to work with BFO to run an eight-week support group for students grieving the loss o f a sibling or a parent. The group met at the school, and was co-led by BFO's Wendy Stuart (RN) and WOSS social worker Cathy Charteris. With the help of the Community Foundation o f O akville's grant. Bereaved Fam ilies o f O ntario Halton-Peel will run four more groups in Oakville high schools in the next year. "Some teens prefer to come to a neutral space like the BFO office for support," says Dean. "Others need an environment they know and want peo ple they trust." Research clearly shows the impor tance o f supporting bereaved teens in their own community. Peer support groups reduce the sense o f isolation bereaved students complain o f after loss. It reduces their sense o f being "dif ferent." as well as providing a place for bereaved adolescents to continue the developmental tasks o f adolescence while coping with "grieving." Some of the short-term effects of bereavement support include improved ability to express feelings and improved relationships both in their immediate sphere (such as close friends) as well as with their broader peer group, family and the communityat-large. In the long term, bereavement sup port groups can prevent more compli cated grief outcomes, and can have long-term benefits for participants, mental health and happiness/produc tivity as adults. The potential outcomes are multifaceted and intergenerational. "These groups are especially impor tant as the child's parent may be unable to respond to the child's need while they are dealing with their own grief," says Dean. " Helping young people to heal from traumatic losses can have a major impact on their subsequent personality development and on the course of the rest o f their lives." As part of the grant. BFO will also run a bereavement education workshop for school service providers, such as teachers, social workers, child and youth workers, psychologists or guid ance counsellors in Halton and Peel. The workshop will run in April. The A dolescent Bereavem ent Support in High Schools project has also received support from the United Way o f Oakville and the Region of Halton C hairm an's C harity G olf Classic.
