Residents champion green space continued from p.4 Mark and Lisa Kirton, whose home backs onto a portion of the Merton lands in the north, presented a five-minute video to show why they believe the green space should be valued more. It captured the area's natural landscape and various animals, reptiles and birds that call it home. Fourteen Mile Creek Residents' Association President Scott Leduc and his wife Shaniah told the Oakville Beaver after the meeting, they understand some development has to happen, however, it's a matter of determining what the appropriate level is, said Scott. "We're not at the finish line yet." "If the creek isn't healthy, the habitat won't be... they're completely a symbiotic relationship," said Shaniah, adding, with development along Dundas Street, residents fear "massive overnight growth" is coming to Oakville. "They've become very impassioned around protecting the environment that's left," said Shaniah, with Scott saying northern Oakville is starting to feel like Mississauga. The residents' group wants Town council and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn to champion their cause and stand up for what residents want. Joining them in advocating for sustainable development and the protection of nature is Oakvillegreen Conservation Association President Karen Brock. Having reviewed the Town's information to date, she said more work needs to be done. "I think (developing the Merton lands by) 20 per cent is still too much," she said. "I realize sometimes you have to compromise, but maybe this is not the land that needs to be (developed). I think we need to get a little more creative." Brock noted Fourteen Mile Creek is already eroding along the edges and development will only worsen the problem and widen the creek bed, which will put fish and other species at risk. "Here we have this pristine section that is so beautifully intact, has dozens of wildlife species living there including a lot of endangered species and we're willing to mess with that and willing to destroy that? It just doesn't make a lot of sense." "It feels like nature is so expendable," Brock added, noting although we live in an urban area, we all still need "good air quality, good water quality and a space for passive recreation." Another open house will be held at Town Hall on April 14 in the South Atrium between 5-7 p.m., followed by a public meeting at Planning and Development Council. A staff report with recommendations will go to Planning and Development Council June 9. Yesterday (March 20), Flynn's office issued notice of a Greenbelt Information Session to be held Monday, April 7 from 7-9 p.m. at the Oakville Soccer Club Community Meeting Room, 1520 Pine Glen Rd. A representative from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and from the Friends of the Greenbelt Association will attend. Those interested are asked to RSVP by April 2 at kflynn.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org or 905-8275141, due to limited seating available.
