www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 20, 2014 | 8 Parents drive for better road safety for Montclair students by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Frustration continues to grow among Montclair Public School parents fighting to get a crossing guard in front of their children's school. Parents say what few discussions they've had with Town of Oakville over the last 18 months, haven't yielded what they had hoped. Renata Chubb, a member of Montclair's parent council, charges there seems to be no interest on the Town's part to assist the Halton.ca 311 school community in finding a solution. Since September 2012, Chubb says emails and phone messages to the Town's traffic department have secured nothing for parents. Student safety is at the root of the request, Chubb told the Oakville Beaver. After hearing of a youth struck by a car while crossing Montclair Drive in June 2012, she said parents rallied to find a solution for the school on Montclair Drive near McCraney Street that has about 425 students, 125 of whom walk to school. Parents favour crossing guard The results "fell well below the warrant," she said. Rogers said Town staffers have been working with residents more than a year to address their concerns and believes some miscommunication may have resulted in a missed meeting with residents. Town vows to work with residents However, she said, staff is willing to "work with residents and see what possible solution there may be." The Town, she continued, has put in place two rubber speed cushions on Montclair and will soon convert them to concrete. An additional speed cushion is planned for the road as well, bringing the number to three along Montclair Drive. Rogers added, as part of residents' concerns about a new French high school being built near McCraney Street and Sixth Line, Town staffers are creating a comprehensive report analyzing vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area, which includes Montclair and surrounding streets as it relates to the new school. The Town is also installing a new pedestrian traffic light in place of the existing crosswalk that connects WOSS' campuses in September 2014, when the new school year begins. see Concerned on p.9 Notice Of Road Closure Intersection of Kerr Street and Burnet Street Related to Upgrades at the Oakville Water Purification Plant Town of Oakville Follow detour route. Parents believe a crossing guard to help children cross the street could be the answer, Chubb said, noting there are multiple guards along McCraney Street and a crosswalk for high school students between the White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) campuses. The mother said there needs to be some way of addressing the pedestrian traffic that is naturally occurring in front of their elementary school. Town officials, however, say the area doesn't warrant a crossing guard. Lin Rogers, acting-manager for Oakville's transportation planning and engineering department, said two assessments were performed to see whether there was enough vehicle and pedestrian traffic to accommodate the parents' request.
