The recipient families selected to live in these homes purchase them through a 35-year, interest free, no-profit mortgage held by Habitat Halton. Payments are adjustable to, but never exceed, 30 per cent of a family's income. While the recipient family for the Pembroke Drive home was not present Monday, Goldrup said they are looking forward to the completion of the project. · The applicant and co-applicant must have consistent work history and have a minimum yearly employment income of $24,000 to afford a mortgage. The existing ReStore in Burlington diverts more than 500 tonnes of usable materials from landfills annually and its proceeds cover Habitat Halton's administrative costs. Habitat Halton also plans to begin construction on two semi-detached homes in Milton during the spring/summer and a 12-unit townhouse complex and one bungalow in Burlington. In Acton, Ont., a rezoning application is currently being reviewed, which, if passed, would allow Habitat Halton to build nine or more affordable homes on a site. "Our board has set an ambitious goal of building 75 homes over the next five years," said Goldrup. "On average, that would be 15 homes per year. We are starting off this year very well by exceeding that number. It is exciting. There is quite a large need in Halton where one in nine people are living in poverty."
