Oakville's other OHLers Fanelli will miss bus rides, pre-game routine, teammates Slater Doggett, LW, Kingston Frontenacs (62 GP , 7G-19A-26P) Drafted as a 17-year-old in 2012 after playing with the Burlington Cougars, the second-year left winger picked up a point in each of his first three games this season and on Oct. 11 had a career night with two goals and an assist against Sudbury. A second-period fight completed his Gordie Howe hat trick. Slater Doggett Conor McGlynn, C, Kingston Frontenacs (65 GP , 12G-8A-20 P) After a year with the Oakville Blades and another with the USHL's Sioux City Muskateers, McGlynn had a goal and an assist against Peterborough in his OHL debut. The 6th round pick in the 2011 draft had his first multi-goal game Jan. 31, scoring twice against Niagara. Jesse Barwell, C, Mississauga Steelheads (58 GP , 4G-13A-17P) The Steelheads' second-round pick in last summer's draft picked up an assist in his OHL debut and scored his first goal 10 days later against Sudbury. A member of the Oakville Rangers OHL Cup champions, he had a four-game point streak in November. Damian Bourne, LW , Miss. Steelheads (46 GP , 5G-9A-14P) The 11th overall pick in the 2012 OHL draft, Bourne's thirdperiod goal was the winner in the Steelheads' 4-3 win over Ottawa Jan. 31. That capped a stretch that saw the 6-foot-4, 209-pound winger score three times in five games. Stefan Leblanc, D, Miss. Steelheads (61 GP , 5G-23A-28P) A night after picking up two assists against Peterborough for his first OHL points, Leblanc had two goals and an assist in a 6-3 win over Barrie. The Steelheads acquired Leblanc from Sudbury just before the trade deadline. He is tied for second in scoring in the OHL among rookie defencemen. Spencer Martin, G, Miss. Steelheads (61 GP , 3.58 GAA, .897 SV%) Playing behind a young team, Martin's numbers have suffered, but he's learned to shoulder a heavy workload, appearing in 61 of 65 games. The Colorado Avalanche draft pick has a career-high 23 wins and made 40 saves against Oshawa Oct. 25 for his first OHL shutout. Five days later, he stopped 39 shots against Belleville for his second. Jake Smith, G, North Bay Battalion (41 GP , 2.58 GAA, .902 SV%) Smith has excelled since inheriting the No. 1 role when the Battalion moved to North Bay. A ninth-round pick in 2011, he is 22-12-4. Fifteen times this season he's allowed one goal or less. With the Jake Smith playoffs approaching, Smith is heating up, allowing just two goals on 64 shots while posting three wins in a four-day span last week. Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals (53 GP , 39G-47A-86P) After missing the first two weeks of the season at the Philadelphia Flyers training camp, Laughton returned to score 10 goals in his first eight games. He missed another month with Canada's world junior team but still ranks eighth in the OHL in goals and 11th in points. He is also second in the league with five shorthanded goals. Matt Spencer, D, Peterborough Petes (61 GP , 1G-13A-14P) The third overall pick in last summer's draft, Spencer's first OHL goal was a timely one. He scored with 6:26 remaining to break a 5-5 tie as Peterborough edged Kitchener. The captain of the Oakville Rangers' OHL Cup championship team, Spencer also had assists in four straight games in October and is a plus-3 this season. Ryan Foss, C, Windsor Spitfires (55 GP , 13G-18A-31P) A free-agent signing, Ross played 18 games without a goal before erupting for a hat trick Nov. 18 in Windsor's 6-0 win over Mississauga. The 17-year-old then added goals in each of his next two games. Foss potted another hat trick Jan. 18 and had a goal and two assists in a 4-0 win over Kingston Jan. 30. Andrew Burns, Windsor Spitfires (7 GP , 0G-1A-1P) The third-round pick of the Spitfires has spent much of the season playing for the LaSalle Vipers of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, where he led the team's defencemen in scoring with 35 points in 46 games. Another member of the Oakville Rangers' OHL Cup championship team, Burns made his OHL debut New Year's Eve. -- Bios compiled by Herb Garbutt; photos by Terry Wilson/OHL Images 13 | Friday, March 14, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com continued from p.12 "The Rangers didn't owe me anything," he said. "I was just a draft pick that had played seven games. That's why I'm thankful every day. That's why I do the community stuff." And it's why this week is emotional. The bus rides home from outposts across Ontario. The solo pre-game walks in the neighbourhood surrounding the Kitchener Auditorium. The lead-up to puck drop on game night. And, of course, his teammates. He's going to miss it all. "Just the way the hockey players are in the room," he says. "There is just something special about it." Fanelli is undecided about his future. Years of community service have opened his eyes to new and exciting possibilities away from the rink. So, there is a lot on his mind as tonight's finisher approaches. He's not sure how the game will go. Not sure how he'll react during his last shift, either. But what he does know is how it will end. With one final text to his mom. The Rangers didn't owe me anything. I was just a draft pick that had played seven games.
