' While it is known that `..here has -been a steady increase in the num- ber of Ontario farms that are being served with Hydro-El.ectric power, it will doubtless sulnprise many to learn that this has reached the impressive total of 18,500 and still going strong. I do not believe that there is any rural hydro development in the world that covers as large a terri- tory so extensively as our system does in Ontario to-dvay, stated R. T. Jeffery, Chief of the Municipal En- gineering Department of the Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission.` This department has supervision over the rural Hydro service. The Com- mission has already constructed 2,240 miles of rural line, the 1926 contri- buition tmallling almost 700 miles, to serve about 5,000 new customers. This makes a record year and gives some indication of the rapidity with -_ which Ontario farmers are availwniug themselves of this `service. During the period of 1921-1924, 1,500 miles of rural line was constructed. We gure on about 600 miles a. year for ` several years ahead, remarked Mr. Jeffery. Once in a district the ser- vice expands very qvuickly. Use {8,000 Horsepower i Farm consumers are using about _ r 8,000 horsepower at the present time and Mr. Jeffery giun-es that about ` 20,000 horsepower will supply he Larm needs of the province when the peak of exrpansion has been reached. These figures, it must be noted, are for bonade farm users and do not include suburban areas near the large cities. The bulk of the usens, of course, are getting Niagara Falls. power, but about 400 farmers are I served from the Ottawa system, and - varies all the way from 1 to 1,500 about 700 between Whitby and Kingston from the Central Ontario System. In the distribution of power, 103 rural dwistricts have been approved by the Commission. While the actual contracts are made with townships, these power dyistni-cts may include several townships within their boundaries, or, as in a few cases, comprise only part of a town- ship, and the number of consumers `.0 a d.is'trict. Township is Re.srpo~nsible Altog`ether contracts are HOW held with approximately 180 townships, the tovmshirp accepting the respon- sibility for the payment of all ser- vice charges for the customers with- in the bounda-ries. All of `.hc larger are supervised by District Superintendents, who look after the con..=truc`.i`on of lines and extensions. These suvperintendents collect the bills and occasionalvly handle sup- plies. Where the district is not large enough to warrant a superintendent these d"ut.ie.s are looked after by `the head office. 1 run 1 n -1 HYDRO SERVES 18,500 -FARMS AND '15 ,STEADlLY EXPANDING unuu uuu.\.. A-pply Trhrougth Council The farrner wh-o wishes to install a Hy-(lrr.o service must first make ap- plication `.o the Township Couincil. His application is then forwarded to the Commission, which sulbmits rates to the township and offers all neces- sary infxorrnatnion. The Township Coruncil then makes a contract with the Commission under which the Commission agrees to construct and operate all lines. The in(l.ivi~d1Lal cus- tomers pay for the construchilon of the line on their own property, for wiring any builzdinims, and, of course, for all fixtures and electrical equip- ment. The service chizwge varies by distnicts, and as the number of con- sumens grrows within a rl.is`.rict the service chamgre is redtuced. districts w.here we started with a maximum chame, said Mr. Jeffery, it-h-ere has been a red-uc ai*on of as" much as 45 per cent, due to an in- crease in .sLubscnibers." Government Pays Half The service change, it might be noted, covers inmterest ansd sinking fumd on one-half of the capital in- veshment, the other half being taken care of by `bhe bon-us given by the Provincial Government. This bonrus, Mr. Jeery estinrnates, means from $14 to $20 per year off.fa.rmers billls, which in the majority of cases ranges from $60 to $125 per year.
