Down in North Toronto they are going to buy a site (where land? is` much dearer than in Barrie), build and equip a school for $55, 000. Here in Barrie. the Board `wants $110,000` to do the same. PRESERVING ROSES. `It is a little known fact that roses may be preserved from spring until winter, a with little trouble, and it makes a very good experiment for any boy or girl that , loves owers. When the roses are blooming, select -a number of buds that are just ready to blow, and cut them from the bush with long stems, -being careful not to touch the bud or the stem close to it. Before .you cut it from the tree, tie a piece of thread tightly around the stem about three inches from the bud. Carry the buds right `to the house, cut off the stems just below the thread, and apply to the stem some sealing .wax, previously warmed-, which is not hot, but just warm enough to be ductile, so that the ower may not be injured. Now roll a piece of paper into a cone- like shape, place the rose in it, and screw it up. Do this with each bud, then place them in. a box. If pos- sible, seal the edges of the box so as to exclude the air; this .Will insure the success of the experiment. Lay the box away where it will be undis- turbed`, and on Christmas Day, or -any time during the ensuing winter, open the box, cut oil the ends of the stalks, and place them in luke-warm wlater. In two or three hours they ,will open, and will reta.in all their fragrance and freshness as in mid- summer. Another way, not quite so good,` is. to lay -aside 0. number of large roses` and let them fade com-v pletely. Then, throwing some sul- -phur on red coals, hold a rose in the fumes, which turns it white. Dip in water, lay it aside for three`, or four hours, and it will be quite red. once more . A KITCHEN CONVENIENCE. A kitchen scrapbook is V a great convenience, for recipes and other kitchen helps` out or` copied-. `from various sources. Group them, a number of 133898 for each form. of cooking, baking, etc. Be sure to have a group of Christmas prepar- ations, and one for miseellaneoius hints`. If an old book is used, writ- ing paper may be (pasted at the, end of each group, for copied helps. Those who -use gas exclusivwely can yet have scalding water always at hand by keeping the kettle on the simmerer, which should` be turned low enough to keep the wa.ter just below the boiling point. It costs between ten and fteen` cents a mo-nthtto run. it, very" little when comfort is taken into- ioonsiderzition. I doubt whether it oosts even this much when one reckons how much gas is saved by not having to heat cold water every time a little is needed for coffee, potatoes, and so Ion. The kettle must be brought. to a .boil on -a .-1a,1`g*er`burner before be, ing set on the simmerer, as a svmall ame under a 7cold'= kettle gives o a. dis-agreeable "odor which I suspect to be due to disintegration of the gas, and so to be fpoisonous.
