The increased usefulness and enlarged scope of the work of the hos pital will be apparent to every citizen who now visits the` institution, and the truth of the assertion made by Dr. Bruce Smith tl;_at it is no longer necessary to take patients to a distant to all. The Royal Victoria will com- pare most favorably with any hospital in the Province and the citizens may well feel proud of the institution. On the front of the new wing is placed :1 tablet bearing the following innnrinfinn - `front inscriptiorr The ladies of the dierent sociefies go interested in hospital work served re- `freshments in the Board Room-, and the whole affair assumed much of the aspect of a social function. Ceremonies of the new Henry Hatton Strathy Memorial Wing last Friday afternoon, and thetruth of this asserg tion was evident from the large num ` ber of people present. The building which has been increased nearly dguble in capacityby the erection ofthe new wing, besides many notable.` improve-' ments in the older portion of the struc- ture, was formally thrown` open for ; public inspection on Friday afternoon, the men s public ward, from which the` patients had been removed, being used as an auditorium, wherein several {short addresses were heard by-those 7 present. R. Porrit, saill it was [pleasant duty on be alf of the Board, to acknowledge this magnificent` gift Ito the Town` and County.` It was the `liberal public spirit which had prompt- ed this gift to the community, and` the Christian spirit which prompted the alleviation of shering. It was entirely ; owing to the late Mr. Sttathy s incentive that the "enlarge-, ment. of the building had been taken in hand. ongomay it prosper and be a lasting. b net tq.the-comn1unity.. I `\`1\Zy father `promised $1,000 towards the establishment and furnishing of_a Ward to betnamed after my mother, which we placed at the disposal of the Board for the erection of this new wing. D and this gift suggested the donation Owing to `Late Mr. _8trathy s "Incentive. I have often wondered" what Bar- rie did without a hospital,_and I might also say the same of the Cdunty of Simcoe. The buildings and" mainten- ance have meant a big expenditure, but every cent which has been ex- pended has been warranted" in the lives" whih have been saved, not to mention the greatalleviation of suf- fe{ing.e.'. ` n pl v '3 - A- AA- . .. The only item calling for any icriticismseems to be the decrease in: ' the Government ` grant. 0 Notwithstand- llng the great increase in the scope of. work of the institution during the past eleven years, ,-the Government aid dropped from $408.90 in 1899 to $889.96 in 1910. There must_ be some statutory reason for this decrease--- surely not. a good one. . In comparing the ,'Report of 1899 with that of last year, we find thatthe number of patients treated has more than trebled-107 in 1899 as compared with 330 last year.` There were 43. operations in 1899 and 143' in 1910. The revenue and, expenses have in- creased in about the V same ratio, $29,000 in 1899 as compared with $97,- 000 in 1910. The increase in useful- lnessls of the hospital has been phenom- ena . ' memory it will remain a monument, ever recalling tliegreat interest which he evinced in the work `of the.`hos- pital. .Of all the charitable work in which he was interested the hospital always came first, and some of my earliest recollections in connection [with my father s business, were the discussions relative to the establish-A fment of a hospital in Barrie. The plans were indeed modest when com~ pared with the present-day structure, a house containing four or ve beds `being thought suicient in 1s93;4.s It was found inadequate and an increase of six beds and the engagement of a trained nurse were discussed. ' Airnh 1-nnnI`I{.. ... L1; ubV a ; .ff;Mr._ H. H. Strathy_state'd t_hat he had been identied `with the movement from, its inception, and that on looking around he could see others also who had "worked from the beginning.. "He oered congratulations on the `hospital reaching such permanency in the erection of the present building, V which, however, _he expected. to see enlarged in time . He was glad to say that the support so far had been -liberal, and that it had been only necessary to put the matter in the proper light in order to `enlist the support and sympathy of all. When the muni- cipalities made grants it greatly lessened the work of collecting, and l distributing the ` burden amongst. the people in` the proper propor- tion. `Mr. Strathy paid a neat compliment to the ladies in point- ing out that their aid had not only resulted a in nancial assist- ance, but was an evidence that the better part of the community was in sympathy with the work. We take the-following from The Advance report of the Opening of the Royal Victoria Hospital, on March 5th, 1903, at which a- very large number of people was pres- ent, the following giving address- es: Mr. Robt.
