There were about -'80 in all. eThey represented the engi- neers, remen, conductors, trainmen .and telegraphers. The delegation asked that the penalty` section, 415, of the Railway Act be amended by striking out the words `or negligent- ly, violates any of the by-laws, rules or regulations of the company or its directors. The railway employes feel that the two words .or negli- gently are now too literally inter- preted, with the result that unreason- able and unjust prosecution followed in a number of cases. If the clause was amended it would conform to sections 283 and 284 of `the criminal code. Sir Wilfrid Laurier did not feel that the request should be grant- ed, although he recognized that the railway men had a grievance, and he would ask the minister of justice and the minister of railways to look into the matter. The protection of the - public had to be safeguarded. ' Ala.-- ---H--3-- -- " ` ` Mr. Neil Wilkinson is still iserious- ly ill. Mrs, G. -H. The interior of these cars is nished` in mahogany, the wood having specially selected for its beautiful grain and markings. Plain, highly nished surfaces are predominant throughout; no heavy carvings are seen, the almost severe plainness be- ing relieved by exquisite marquetry work. Five inlaid lines and delicate designs form panels around the berth fronts and around each end of the body of the car. The upholstery is of a delicate shade of green, with rich Wilton carpets to match. The smoking rooms are nished through- out in very handsome dark wood, somewhat resembling walnut, but much richer in appearance, and up- holstered in leather. The lavatory for gentlemen is a roomy compart- ment and -tted with modern open plumbing. Thecomfort of t_he'ladies has not been forgotten, and an ex- ceptionally l_arge and roomy toilet room has been tted in these cars to resemble as much as possible the dressing room of a home. A notice- able feature and a newer innovation in these cars is a greater space be- tween the upper and lower berths, and though the regular sleeping cars operated in this` service before, were roomy, the present berths are still more so. The hygienic features are plainness of nish, highly polished smooth surfaces, concrete ooring under carpets, rubber tiling on oors of, smoking, toilet rooms, passages, platforms and saloons, the walls of the latter being -nished in white en- amel tiling, Another new feature is the lighting arrangements, the cars having been tted with the latest Pintsch gas mantle lamps, enclosed with opalascent globes, which give a beautiful soft light. The cars are equipped with all the latest appli- ances for safety and strength, such. as ste.el platforms, wide vestibules, etc. I I 1 ! I [EVENTS 01;` THE WEEK Partridge, Mr. and Mrs. C.
