This fact. coupled . with the heavy `frost early in. Most . pantomine characters were I originally borrowed from the Italians. i The first real English pantomime was produced at a theater in Lincoln's Inn ` 1 Fields in 1720. It was called Harle- ` quin Executed, and its subtitle was 5 A New Italian Comic Scene Between ` a Scaramouche, a Harlequin. a Coun- try `Farmer, His Wife and Others. Qhepertormance was very successful. About the middle of the eighteenth l century the character or pantomime ; performances was completely altered, \ 'chiey__ because of the genius or the A famous Grimaldi. who made the` clown 3 the rst gure in the pantomime. _Gri- r l maldi rst appeared at Sadler s ,Welln ' theater-, where he played the part not `a monkey. I o him it matters not which party. holds power as l_ong_ as. the country is economically governed. As. `Hon. Mr.` gfribson -has said. ninety-nine out or one, hundred questions which came before the, Legislature are not party questions at all.` The same is true of the Dominion Parliament. Even where parties divide it is impossible forthe than of average intelligence to say What is the cause or division. Why. then. should farmers divide as party men? There -is reason` why a machine. party man in town should support this party or that. He expects his re- ward in the form of an office. There is reason for legislation by "which they may profit at the public Vex- pense-corporations, such as the dry- dock companies. smelting companies, etc.-should ally themselves with `a party. They expect their reward in the form of legislation calculated to make millionaires of the few at the expense of the many. But farmers `get none` of the offices; they _get {none of the bonuses; their share con- Esists simply in paying the taxes from Q the spending of which others profit. `There is no reason. therefore. why :they should be. party men at all. At`. `the sa_me time. there is no reason why a farmer who is a member of gthis association. if he chooses to re- ? main a Liberal. or if he chooses to re- imain a Conservative. should not do ;so. He is completely master of his ?own action. All that is hoped for {from the creation of this organiza- tion is that farmers shall be brought jttogether in a waythat will permit fof a frank. and free discussion of ` public matters from a farmer's stand- ipoint to the end that all may come to see that all farmers have a com- mon interest. By meeting together `and talking over among themselves ,the cattle guardquestion. tlle rail-V `way -drainage question. the matter of 1 freight rates. the equalization of tax- `,ation._ and the abolition of subsidies. `farmers must became convinced that `these are the great questions so far gas they are concerned. Then. even if they do remain Liberals they will see that no candidate is nominated by their party who is not right on `these questions. If they remain-Com servatives it will be the same as far as that party is concerned. What will be the eventual result? No -matter which party wins the elec- tion. the farmers cannot lose.
