The first to ac- . knowledge his tall from virtue was any old police court habitue, who had been convicted twice for assault and battery _ . and once for drunkenness and disorder-` ly conduct. This elector was further distinguished in that he had gured in atrial for perjury. To the court. the allegation of bribery was made and `the `name of a highly respectable citizen was associated` with the offence. Cor- roborative testimony was presented and all looked well for the Government until it leaked out that the witnesses had actually been paid for the evidence they had given. This was -a startling discovery. But it was merely the be- ginning of disclosures, for other men presented themselves and admitted that they also had been approached with liberal offers of money to swear that they had been the victims of oorrufp Glen, or to induce others _to 'appear'in court and make statements of a like.` kindl Scmeyielded to thevitemptation and repented afterwards. If the swearing foiled to I impress the court, i there was to be ` a rebate, or return of half of the 1. price. The complete story," `with its conspiracies and intrigues. the _invitn- tions to testify, the payments for evi- dence,- which the judges soondisoovered to be felee, and the brazen sweering of the ` police court gruduntee and the A on ' convicts is most shocking. It celled u forth the condemnation of the court, I end" itwill `awaken the indignation of all right-thinking men. No one need . `doubt whntthe underlying purpose of , this business` was. `Looking at `it in L the light of the "machine" operations -, in the various constituencies. it seems that the scheme oontempluted, first, the ;' undoing of the verdict 'of the people of r South Oxtord by the use or bought ' testimony, including that of oz con- ` riots, and, secondly, the carrying of the . constituency for the -Government by the . exercise of the arts of ` the ballot-box r stu`er. ' I THE ELECTION PETITIONS. In consequence of the uncertainty which exists in the minds of many people regarding the election petitions, it might be stated that the South 0:- ford election trial hasibeen adjourned until Dec. 1, two charges of hiring rigs having been established. The Middle- sex case is `nished, but goes to Osgoode Hall , for argument. Five cases have been denitely xed for trial, North Perth, Oct. 98 ; North Norfolk, Nov. 4 5` North Wentworth, Nov. 4.;.Glen- garry, Nov. _II, and North Grey, Nov. ll. .In two cases, "Centre Bruce and Lennox, motions are pending to set aside the petitions, and these motions will have to be disposed off before the dates for their trial can be xed. There are standing for .trial, with dates still unxed, Frontenac, Sault Ste. Marie, North Waterloo, North `Ontario, N orth York, Halton, Kingston and East Wel- liugton. These protests have not been abandoned, but in each of these cases investigations have been in progress in order to ascertain if the statements made after the election, on which the protests are based, are well founded or are the result of election excitement, -and, of-course, there is always a possi- bility that the lawyers will find that there is not a reasonable chance of-suo-` cess, and that. the case may not goto trial, vowing to the enormous expense of that proceeding. `The cases that -have been set down for disposal at Os- goods Hall, that is to say in which no evidence will be submitted, are East and West Hamilton, Manitoulin, Ad-` dington, Centre Simcoe, Stormnnt, South Wentwortb, * South Norfolk,` South Bruce, Lincoln, South Huron, West Huron. ` ' ' N EDITORIAL NOTES. ` Hon.
