' ' L` Press Gallery Legislature, A g s g Feb. 16th, 1902. ` T Truly the week just closed leaves. the ; Government in a`very bad `state of ` mind. Harrnwed by the practical oriti cisms of the Opposition speakers they have complained loudly that the `Con? servatives were blocking legislation by prolonging the debate; Mr. Whitue-, s reply was prompt and to the point Bring down your legislation and we will gem: with it. Thus cornered Mr. Ross announced that he would have his prohibition bill ready for Tues day, and the Opposition readily agreed to close-the debate on `Friday night. But again the Premier faltered. He u approaches the [prohibition measure which is already drafted and provides for a referendum and requires a three fths prohibition` majority, with fear and trembling. Those prohibition views he once held may be near to his heart yet, but he yearns with a great yearn ing for the liquor vote. Consequently he decided it would be better for the debate to go on yet a little longer in order that the prohibition may remain hidden. ` I a I 4- .I,' I :------------~?~ V W Tllyollon should secure a. The Premier stated, and the Globe re port prove: that he did, that in the thirty years of Liberal rule, 5.152 milea of timber lands had been aoldi. at "V an average price of $1,324 per square mile. Asia matter of fact the sales were 5,001 square-miles more than _ the Premier stated and the average was $725 _ per aquare mile and not $1,324" per mile. The error the Premier made was in leaving out the sale of October 15th, 1872 when the averageprivce was $117.- 79 per aquarejmile. , . _. , G . Mr. Rose got angry as he wriggled to get out oi the corner. He even re. pudinted that good old journal for which he often writes editoriale-the Globe. He declared he had referred. only to the lee subsequent to the Blake Government. G But _he had to deny the Globe report and he could not deny that the Blake Government was a Liberal Government and that the sale must be counted in those thirty years l of which he is accustomed to boost. ,, _L- -L--- ..., 2.. 1-1! He called the attention of the House this week to the unworkable act passed a couple of years ago and asked that something be done in the matter. He forced Hon.
