Cannington, after twodefeats, repaired its ranks and practiced. On Monday they sent a team to Beaverton and defeated the latter on their own grounds by a score of 5 to 4. The game was closely contested and only the excessive heat caused any lagging and if the 10th is a cool day the Barrie boys can look for some swift playing. Dunn. of Orillia, and L. Doyle are playing with Beaverton, and the team is in good shape. They play their combination well and are good stick-handlers Besides this they V check hard. So. when Gannington beats them, Cannington must also be a pretty good team. The Barrie people were very disappointed, however, _ as the sun was very hot and the people _had to stand in a place where there was no shade and wait until a football match was over, and then see only half the lacrosse game to be in time for the nude In the world of sports this has been an important week. One of the matters of chief interest has been the phenomenal record of the Toronto Baseball Club. Its victory after victory has landed the club to second place in the league with Rochester still at the top. Lacrosse matches by the score were played on Dominion Day and of these the big matches were the Montreal- Toronto, where the latter had an easy vic- tory, the Ccrnwall-Shamrook, which resulted in the former s favor and the Barrie-Alliston. The Tecumseh games were also important especially to Galt and Brantford, both of which defeated the Indians. The Urillia Canoe Club celebrated the First by a reaatta, a program of which has been received at this oce, and which is very neat aair. It is hoped a regatta will be held on Kempen- feldt Bay in the early part of August. Alliaton won from .TottenhamL on Fridayl by a scope of 8 to 5. V I The victory of Barrie over Orillia set. them on their `feet and they expect a big attendance at the game next Wednesday, Beaverton has been at the head of the league and with their reinforcements will play great lacrosse. 1f it weren't too late the boys would be asking for a civic half holiday. Next Wednesday, remember. The Barrie Lacrosse Club lost probably their best player on Saturdav, when Fred McKee left town for several months, going to Sturgeon Falls Pulp Co. s lands on a sur- vey.` He was not only a winner at the game but socially was a favorite with_the boys, and no doubt his absence will be distinctly felt when sticks are crossed again. The Barrie 1I s played an exhibition game at Alliston on Monday and were defeated by 4 to 1. The grounds were rough and the sun was rough on the boys so they had no easy `time. McFadden scored for Barrie, its only one. MacNab, Clerk, Reid and Griith all got a. little of the seamy side, and Clifton of Alliston had his head acci- dentally cut by Clark as a result; of the former s dodging. & ulu & ' The annual regatta of_ the Toronto Canoe Club takes place next Saturday. Orillia. has over 200 canoes. How many are` there in Barrie? ' The secretary of the Boating Club requests all those who would enter in races, canoe or rowing, to send in their names, specifying which races they would compete in. In -In & The Boating Club were to have [run a moonlight-excursion last night. As THE ADVANCE went: to press Wednesday after- noon it cannot be stated whether or not the moonlight was a success. .1 .11. .K Band concert night last week saw the bay covered with small boats. Interest eeeme to be reviving in canoeing and towing. ' A A `The-Toronto Canoe Club carried off most of the honors at the Pan-American. Out of acard of twent races they got ten rets. five seconds an ve thirds. The competi- tion was keen, and they had as their oppon- ents the representatives of the Grand Trunk Boating Club of Montreal, St. Lambert Canoe Club, Lachine Bicycle and" Canoe Club of Montreal, Bu'alo Canoe Club and several men from well-known clubs on the other side. ` e The writer of Outdoor Pastimes in the Toronto Saturday Night says :--It looks as if the race between Gaudaur and Towns were not such an assured thing after all. Towns has come forward with another in- stallment of kicks, and refuses to sign the articles drawn up by Gaudaur. In a list of about nine articles he has raised objections to four, so the way things stand now, the submarine cables will have to work overtime again before the match will be denitely xed-if Mr. Towns desires to arrange a match at all, which is doubtful. The Globe says of the tennis tournament at I Toronto :-W. A. Boys of Barrie, the champ- ion of the province of Quebec, was on hand to play the scheduled match of ekhilntion doubles, but his partner missed connections. However, Mr. I-Iardman of the Toronto Club made so able a substitutethat they won out I in the third set. , , . I Mr. W. H. It was therefore with the greatest surprise that it was `heard that the Orillia Times abused it. It must have been a surprise to Oriliia peo- ple as well; neither the Packet nor the News-Letter received any such falsied re- port. The Times, however, in its mention of the match said Bu.rrie s play was rough and the referee made no attempt to stop it. Notwithstanding the brutal treatment the young lads stuck gameily to their play, and it was only after two or three had been cut to pieces that Barrie were able to score. getting 4 goals in the lasttwenty minutes. Jack Uurran and Dan O Connor played with the Orillia, and both freely admit they never got as many bruises in as short a time as they_did in this game mhin In an nvunuunn5nl can :9 1... an-.5-u-A "WI... no QB DIJVJ \-Ill! He told the writer and a number of others that he had received more bruises and had seen more rough play in ve minutes of -many games than he had experienced in the whole game at Barrie. It was hoped that lacrosse was to be played in the spirit of true sport and this season saw both Barrie and Orillia playing it as is should be. Then it must appear discourag- ing to both teams to have false reports like the one referred to published. Talk about no self-respecting club playing in Barrie. especially with a Barrie referee, why the game would be killed, sooner by such unde- served abuse, if continued, than by as rough `play as some certain Orillian s imagination seems" to have conjured up. -_ -r.._'___- .._v _-Hon' J. This extreme irregularity is conned solely to this class._ pThe work done is `neither full and accurate nor hard and steady. The report deals fully with all the classes` and winds up as follows :-.-Iu view of the above fact. it seems to be forced upon us, as the only way` to avoid a similar report from the Inspector on his next visit is that the arrangement now existing as to the reception into the institute of the Public school 5th form pupils should.be carefully reconsidered by the Board.
