' h ` `How diicult it is for _some people to do justice to apolitical opponent. . There may be some excuse for this in the heat of a political campaign, but surely when the battle `is over and the smoke has cleared away a somewhat diepusinuste review of the situation should `not be too much to expect. But the Toronto Star is scarcely cap A able of fullling thisexpectation. In one of its recent issues obiecticn was taken to some complimentary reference by a contemporary to the insurance Sir "Charles '1`upper- was instrumental in aecting on the lives of our soldiers while in South Africa. The Star ccn~ codes that the placing of the insurance on the men was both generous and A patriotic, but insinuatingly adds that it _ was also political and partizan} What is meant by this it is not easy to im-V aginc. Is it true that a public man cannot perform a worthy act even in the midst of a political campaign with out being charged with some sinister motive? And even though he felt justified in expecting the commendation `and support of the electorate as there suit of his act does that make it any the lessnoble and praiseworthv 1- Sir Charles '.l`upper s endeavors have re anlted in placing $31,000 at the dis- posal cf the hcirsof those. who fell on gjhc eld of "battle, and while `we are *7 not in a position to speak concerning is his motive, as the Star has done, its a are nevertheless aurethe results are ._ such as will commend the act tcthe. She has so distinguished herself in her English` work that she has been promoted in the middle of the year to a" course open only to the brightest stu- dents, that called English I2 in the ooL legs catalogue. A` The Princess of the'Austriss, eldest sister of the young King of Spain, whn recently married Prince Charles of Bourbon, is said to be considerably more cultured than the majority of Spanish maidens of her age. Her edu- cation hss been carefully sluperinteuded by her mother, the Queen Regent, and contrary to the custom of the country, outdoor exercises and pastimes have been included in the curriculum, al though the Princess and her sister, have _not inherited their mother s' fondness for outdoor life. Mr. Forster, an eminent portrait . painter, was last year commissioned to make, while in England, such researches and copies as would enable him to paint a portrait of John Wesley that would be a credit to Canadian Methodism. As a result, Mr. Forster has secured copies `of portraits of ' J ohn Wesley, Chas. Wesley and the mother, Mrs. Susannah 'Wesley, and is at present engaged on life sized portraits of each. They will likely be placed in Victoria University`.
