At the opening of the schools this morn- ing pupils and teachers nd themselves in class rooms that are as clean as they pos- sibly can be. The floors in the West, Cen- tral and South Wardshave been well scrubbed and afterwards polished with a mixture of raw and boiled oils and turpentine, which not only acts as a preservative to the hard- wood but adds materially to the cleanliness of the rooms. "* 1 IV II ,,!,A- f,,_-2 "Not Founded on Facts." (Collingwood Enterprise, Aug. 25th.) We notice by a report of a meeting of the ratepayers of Barrie to discuss the Electric Light question, that one of the speakers, Mr. W. A. Boys, read letters from Coun- cillor G. W. Brown. John Nettleton, W. T. Toner and Fred. C. Hodgson, stating that Collingwood would gladly sell out to a com- pany. He gave gures to snow that private lighting in Orillia and Collingwood costs more than in Barrie." We do not know of any burning desire on the part of the rate- avers of Collingwood to sell their electric ight plant-in tact, quite the contrary is the case. If any oi these gentlemen would like to try arun at the next municipal elec- tion, on this issue, we venture to say, they vliill End it a hurdle, too high for them to c m . The question to be submitted to the people on Sept. 29th is as follows :- Are you in favor of the passing of an act prohibiting the importation, lnanufacture or sale of spirits, wine, ale, beer, cider, and all other alcoholic liquors for use as beverages? All Canadians qualied to vote at provin- cial eleotions will be entitled to vote on this question. To defray the expenses of_the plebiscite, the sum of $250,000 was appropriated at last session of Parliament. The new franchise law calls for the printing of the provincial voters lists. as intended for ' federal purposes, at Ottawa. The work has, however, not yet commenced, consequently it is more than` likely that the lists as printed for provincial pur- will have_.to -be used. Hudson, of the Elizabeth street church, occupied the pulpit of the Burton Avenue Methodist church on Sunday morning and preached an excellent sermon. His theme was. Why did Christ 20` away from the world 2 In the evening the Rev. Charles Taylor preached a very acceptable sermon. . Imfliheiiother morning as a young man was walking up the sidewalk on the townline he threw a lighted cigar on the walk nearly on- posite Mrs. Nixon's residence, and in a little while afterwards the sidewalk was noticed to be on re. A few pails of water was necessary to put the re out. This is an- I other instance of carelessness. One of the pleasing features of the annu- ally increasing ow of summer tourists. to Beautiful Barrie is frequently in evidence on the Sabbath in our churches, when gifted vocalists from distant parts lend their aid to" the musical portion of the services. Among the most interesting of these genial and talented strangers who have this season favored us with their presence are Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Benn, of Saginaw. Mich., who assisted the Presbyterian choir last- Sunday evening, and also sang during the oifertory. a soprano and bass duett by Sch- necker. Rejoice in the Lordg their beau-' tiful rendering of which was much enjoyed -bv the congregation. Mr. and Mrs. Benn, who were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. `E. Whitehread, left on Monday for their home much pleased with our town and its attrac- tiveness as a summer-holiday resort. Regular Meeting of the W. C. T. U. On Monday afternoon the annual business meeting of the W._C. T. U. was held. The attendance was large, nearly all the churches being represented. Mrs. Warren, from West Virginia, who represents the state de- partment of work for that place, was pre- sent. She says that over there they con- sider the Canadians `far ahead of them `in aggressive work. She thinks also that our laws are better and so give us a better op- portunity to work.
