On Sunday evening, J une 5th, Rev. D. D. McLeod, of the Presbyterian church, made the following remarks on 9 the death of Mr. William Black: 1 to expound. I am reminded by these thoughts, of n hearer who for a period of two years eat here with us, listening to the gospel, Mr. Wm. Black," and who took occasion from time to time to express his eym- pathy with the truth I had been trying Last Sabbath his body was laid to rest at his former home, in the preeenoe of 3 large `company "of those who had known him through the former years of his lite. . e We do not speak of these things to exalt a fellow creature. Mr`. Black was too intelligent a Christian to think that he in himself was better than other men, or had any righteousness to com.- mend him before the righteous Judge. His faith and hope rested solely upon the atoning work of his Saviour, Jesus Christ. Knowing that, he gave expres- sion tc the fullest assurance that whether in life or in death it would be well with him. This faith he had lived in throughout his past life. It had been his pleasure when health and opportu- nity permitted to preach it to the peo- ple, and to teach it to the young. He was a man of superior education, of wide reading, and of more than ordi nary ability. He was an excellent speaker, andconld present the gospel, or advocate the cause he was interest- ed in, with clearness and force. He knew that it is not `the expressions of the dying hour which attest the sin- cerity of our faith, but rather the in- uence which it has had, and has upon our lives. Therefore these expressions of hope and condence in God, to which he gave utterance, which dispel the gloom of the dying chamber, and take away the sting from _our sorrow at parting with our friends, are but the natural result of that habit of faith which has kept and guided us in the imperfection of our human nature are manifest in us V all, but amid these the grace of makes itself evident, and it did so in him. His kindly spirit and gentle ways, endeared him to his gtmily circle. His sympathy with the work of God, and willingness to use his talents in the Master's service; made. him of great in the church he had been an ioice-bearer, and a very helpful friend to his pastor. ifhovsh takes 8'97 before re-hi*'8'*" advanced Page. and though his was ahealth _prevented him from very active -exertion for a considerable time, yet he we-. 4 as-such amide f9r .es.istpe.or ohms His conduct as were A ever on the side of the trut-Vh, and -are encouragement to c ed e:mp1s.were ever on_ "behalf , $2 the? 57.. ,*liS. It is in such an hour that the faith which we profess is put to the test. If that faith is genuine it is then that its power ap- pears. The bill as it left the Commons allows 3 Quebec voter to vote in all constit- uencies where he can qualify, while an Ontario voter has but one vote under all circumstances. An appeal to a` judge is allowed in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, but not in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Mani- toba.
