The property then fell into the hands of mortgagees, who disposed, of it to Mr. Alex. Constable. Last spring John Gordon was killed near Emsdale ; and some time afterwards his wife and_ daughter took possession by force, of their former home. hey appeared in the police court to answer the charge, and were allowed off on suspend- ed entence. On Monday afternoon Mr. Constable went away for a time, and in his absence Donald Gordon, a son of John Gor- don's, appeared on the scene. .Mrs. `Con- stable and Miss Thompson were in the house. Pointing to his ring in which was a bloodstone, he said, I ll spill some of that before I give up possession. He presented two revolversat the ladies, who, not being used to such sights, ed for their lives. In the evening Mr. Constable returned and tried to get possession, but was also met with the revolver, with the alarming addi- tion that one shot was. red at him. He then retreated and came into town and laid information before 0. H. Lyon, who then is- sued a warrant for Gordon's arrest. While Constable was in town a young fellow called Mason, purporting to be a friend of Gor- ,don s. approached the latter in a conversa- tional way, and when he gpt near enough, grabbed his man, and soon had him under arrest. He started off for Barrie with him, and when `near the town met Detective Beardsley going out, and handed over his prisoner. U. ` The absence of a great many members was a noticeable feature at the regular monthly meeting of W. C.- T. U., on Mon- day afternoon `This was-unfortunate, es- pecially as the delegates to the Provincial, Dominion and World s Conventions gave in- teresting reports, which showed progress on all lines, more particularly among railway men, sailors and lumbermen. The Minister of Education has also promised the Union that temperance will be put on the curricu- lum in all iunior classes, and this will be considered a great advance in many schools. Arrangements were made at the meeting to visit the various anti-cigarette leagues in town and give such assistance as is desirable. It was decided to hold the annual At Home to Model school students .and teachers on Thursday, evening. Nov. 11th, in the parlors on Dunlop street. It is expected that all members will be present and-assist in giving the visitorsan excellent evening's entertain- ment. Mr. J. C. Morgan delivered an address in London last week on "Sundav Schools, their shortcomings and great opportunities, in which _he gave the results of a quarter of a century of work and, failure in Sunday schools. Some of his observations were as follows :-Children should be built up as church members; children should grow up in the knowledge of church principle ; punc- tuality and plainness of dress in teacher and pupils should be taught; the work should not be left exclusively to ladies; teachers are not properly trained ;` teachers require a practical knowledge of what they require to teach ; the superintendent should he a lay- man ; teachers and scholars should grow up together; small boys should `be taught by men. Mr. Morgan s address was highly ap- preciated. e - poet-vi`:-av Van a0o|Q&&Vbu EVIVWUC Last Saturday night Arthur. Young Guilfo lei was also [knocked out of his wegonend ell, to the road, skinning his nose badl . Both horses were freed from the rigs an V ran off.` but were caufht before. they had gone far.
