The decorations were left to the young men whose names'we gave last week, and how well they did it may be known by the universal admiration. their work evoked. The Empire newspaper had abused their member in a most unjustifiable way, and Mr. McCarthy, after the treat- T ment he hadareceived, had no alternative left but the course he had pursued (Ap- lause.) Mr. McCarthy in the opinions be entertained was hacked by the great mass of the people of Ontario.i (Loud applause.) [For himself, he would say that he had ` followed a somewhat similar course to that of Mr. McCarthy, and on taking his eon- stituents into his con`idence they had "fully sustained and vindicated him. His speech being. {preceded by 9. song from Mr. Meeking ` The doctor was cautious and non-committal ? in his remarks. The response of Mr E. He owed them an apology for - being one of the many who dared to smoke in their presence. He felt that his amiable wife was responsible for his breach of eti- quette, .for she had caused him to believe that the amount of smoke which he dissem- *inated through the house was a blessing ` inasmuch as it was very destructive to moths. He had always been taught to face the foe, which in this case was a formidable ! bill of fare and toast list which fact neces- sitated his turning his back to the ladies.
