The people of Barrie do not care two straws about where the building is situated, as it would be of no special advantage to this or any other locality that we can see, although there can be no doubt that the vicinity of the county town is the proper place for such establish- ments for the most obvious reasons We have shown that the money granted by the various municipalities of the county to support indigents, approaches $6,000 a year, which would be much more than enough to -sustain a House of Refuge and Industry, and give the inmates an amount of comfort they cannot have under pre- sent circumstances. In the winter the great majority of the inmates of the county gaol are the unfortunates who ock to the town from outside municipalities, who are committed to gaol as vagrants- Only a few days ago an old man from the Town- ship ot Tossurontio, came. and begged our Police Magistrate to send him to gaol, as he had no home and no means of support, and yet'we tiud the Reeve of that munici- pality voting with the nays on this ques-' . tion. We hold that it is disgraceful for a wealthy county like Simcoe to have its- pmr wandering about begging, and thrust into a prison among criminals upon the mean, unworthy and utterly" defence-V less plea that benet would accrue to the place where the building is situated,` and that the minor municipalities might have to contribute to its support.
