Mi is an incidentfr mithe South A--_-Missis`s`ippi, written in Apri1,`189o, just `after the Grippe had visited that country. . I am a farmer, one of `those who have `to rise early and work late. At the beginning of last Winter Iwas on a trip to the City of Vicksburg, Miss. ,Where I got well drenched in a shower of `rain. -I went home and was soon after seized with a dry, hacking cough. This. grew worse every day, until I had to seek relief. I consulted Dr. Dixon who has since died, and he told me to -geta bottle of Boschee s German Syrup. Meantime my cough grew worseand worse and then the Grippe came along and I caught that also very severely. My condition .then compelled me to do something. I got two bottlesof German Syrup. I began using them, and before taking much of the second bottle, I was entirely clear of the Cough that had hung to me so long, the Grippe, and all its bad elfects. e I felt-tip-top and have felt that, way ever since. The disinfection of drinking- water on a large scale, in reservoirs, wells, etc., is impracticable. But it is a very simple matter to disinfect, water which is suspected of being contaminated with the germs of cholera, typhoid fever, or any other disease transmissible In this way. This is readily accomplished by boiling. As already stated, all known disease germs are destroyed by the boiling tem- perature v maintained for half an hour. . The importance of this precaution during, the prevalence of an epidemic of cholera or of typhoid fevercannot be over-esti- mated, when the water used for drinking purposes comes from an impure source, or is liable to contamination by the dis- charges of patients suffering from these diseases. Those articles of fogd, and l. especially milk, animal broths, etc., 1 which might serve as pabulum for disease : germs, should, during the prevalence of an epidemic, be cooked but a short time before theyare eaten. And such food, if put aside for some hours after it has been prepared, should always be again subjected to a_ boiling temperature short- '. lybefore it iaserved. For instruments and vessels ot copper, brass and` tin, boiling water or. the catholic j acid solu- tion, may be used.` Vessels of porcelain or glass may be disinfected by heat. _or by `either of the disinfecting solutions mentioned. Sponges should be kept per- manently in one of the disinfecting solu- tions, or, what is `better, may be dis- , pensed `with entirely for the cleaning of wounds. In place of them, v irrigation with a disinfecting solution may be resort- ed to, or the discharges may be wiped away with some cheap absorbent material which can be burned afterhaving been _ once used.` ` Patients in hospitals, with infectious diseases. will "of course be keptin isolat- ed wards. Everything which comes from such a ward should be`disinfected, and the immediate attendants of the sick should not be allowed to visit other parts of the hospital without rst changing their outer clothing for a recently disin- fected suit, and washing their hands in a disinfecting solution When relieved from (lntv tl-min nu-.A.....I,...1..:..... _L---IJ per cent. solution of I `_., 5, ,,I" ,.'=. 5... iospitsls; -The fdirectionsly ivfdrasay given. infreg;srd to disinfection : of ' the sick-room T and its contents apply as well to hospital wards in which patients with infectious diseases are treated. The antiseptic treatment of wounds, in con- nection with a proper regard `for cleanli- ness and ventilation, has practically bau- ishedy these diseases from well regulated hospitals.
