The members of Loyal Orange Lodges No. 16 and 650, to the number of about eighty, .clad in regalia, marched in procession the deceas- having been a very prominent member of the Order. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, having been advanced to the'17 before he left Ireland. On the coffin were several Orange and Masonic emblems and also a beautitul oral wreath surrounding a- cross, underneath which was the word, Father. The church was densely crowded and many were unable to obtain entrance. ' In accordance with `a promise given to the deceased many years,`ago the service was conduct- ed by an old and deeply attached friend, Rev. W. W. Bates. M. A. present Rector of Thornhill and Richmond Hill. The choir sang with great sweetness and feel- ing the hymns, " Rock of Ages," -A few more years shall Roll. and Days and moments quickly ying, Miss Bella Lennox acting as organist with her usual and well known ability. . The sermon was preached from Rev.21. 4. The preacher spoke of the sufferings of humanity and the cause of them, the longing and strivings of all good men for a state of life which should be free from suffering and of various efforts made in that direction ; the wise and comforting considerations a'oi-ded by philosophy as distinct from the Christian Religion and the prospects held out of vast improve- ment to be effected in the condition of man by progress in -human skill and knowledge. He also showed that the amelioration of man's woes wasall that could be effected by such remedies ; that they neglected to take in- to account the real cause of suf- - fering; never even ventured to predict its entire removal, much less to compens- ate those who have gone_ for all that they have suffered as factors in God's plan for the world's regeneration ; and that the an- nihilation of human woes and man's elevation to a condition of absolute bless- edness could be `accomplished only through the incarnation. He also spoke in very eulogistic terms of him that was gone, not holding him up as being i maculate but speaking of his many vir use. He spoke touchingly of the`deceased s love for his family, friends and neighbours; his many acts of kind help to men that were poor. but honest and industrious; R his wonderful success in business and the qualities that led to it ; his thorough loyalty as a British subject and his love for Ireland and Canada ; and also of this sound and true churchmanship. `All pre- sent were intensely attentive, and many of them deeply affected. When the church ser- vices at the grave were concluded the- Orangemen,,called to order by Mr. David Dunn. between whom and theadeparted a peculiarly strong and tender friendshiplhad existed for many years-performed the last sad. oices of affection for their de- parted brother. All then quietly dis- persed, feeling that they had lost a friend who would not soon be replaced. and whose loss would be long deplored. It is needless to say that the afflicted family have the sympathy of the whole parish in lthe sore bereavement. ' _ oouncy moi ornnuuu court. The regular meeting of the Public School Board was held in the Board room, Central school, on Monday evening. All the members were; present. The committee on supplies recommended the purchase of 100- cords of wood and new seats in part of the Central school. A motion by Mr. Rogers to increase the salary of Miss Bowen, to $300, was car- ried. Mr. Metcalf, a resident of Kem- penfeldt,` applied to have his non-resident fees reduced, but the majority of the Board, after due consideration, could not see any good reason to grant the request. As some members wished to attend the political meeting at the Hall the Board adjourned at 8 o'clock, after a session of one hour. Vote tor nut 11 Mccarthy. the tear- geu defender ol e right. . Bow'l'h_eyV1ew the situation. The Detroit Evening News savs :- The Premier judges correctly that the result of a policy of commercial union would be annexation. The union of Canada with the United States is the manifest destiny of that country. The union of the two countries is becoming. more pressing year by year, and from the very necessities of the stronger nation will be brought about some day on its terms, `whereas it may be accomplished by the consent of the weaker nation on its terms. if it goes about it rightly. So far, the United States can do without Canada. When the time comes that, by the growth of its population its lands shall be taken up and its resources developed, the demands of its people for more room and more advantages will press so strongly that the integrity of Canada as a depen- dency of a foreign empire will be griev- ously threatened The best minds in Can- ada see these things as of the future, and are ready to meet them half-way.
