One hundred and twiii{y.human"..beings swept into eternitywithout a moment : warning, and this. resulting from neglecting to dangers. Any moment however a large amount of gas may rush from its concealed chambers by a blow from the miner s pick and such an explo- ' sion as that at the Spring Hill mine take ` place burning, maiming and killing the unfortunate miners and the choke damp or after damp which results from the explo- sion destroy those which the direct"`e'x- plosion left alive. I An Appeal fromthe h;n1ateria.1 Associa- N tion of Barrie. _ k Fellow Citizens : ` .'6tW'W U'w/Imsuw . Q As you are aware, the ministers of the church of Christ in prosecuting the duties of their calling are frequently brought in: to contact with the evils of intemperance. We listen to the tale of the broken heart-' ed wife. t We `hear the sad sto of the mother weeping for `her son, of t e sister for her brother. We witness the sorrow of the children. We see the misery of the home. We are called to remonstrate with the father or brother in regard to his drunkenness and our hearts are made sad by these things. We know that the Christian people of the community, indeed every man of right principle. Christian on. -`A5 unnunnn-In nnnv thnun KR WE \I an. an uou--g UVUl.'y uuau UL 1.1.5 ' or not, sorrows over these things as we do and we know that all right minded people regard with regret the fact that there seems to be a slackening of the tem- erance sentiment of the community and anincrease of intemperance in the town We therefore appeal to you our fellow citi- zens to aid us in discountenancing the in- dulgence in liquor, and in supporting the laws of the land in restricting its sale within legal limits. It is known to us and to you that there are in the town men who are on the brink of ruin through drink who are neglecting their work, and yield- ing to habits which must soon put them in the ranks of the drunkard. ` There are those who .have already lost their good standing and are. being brought lower every day by their drinking habits. For their sakesjwe appeal to you to discourage the practice of treating and the habit of social drinking in your homes and to help by your example in-their recovery. To some LII! plluvlyav _of you it may seem safe'and right to drink where and when you please, but it cannot seem right to help on a brother s ruin. It cannot seem right to set an example to theyoung that leads them into the path of destruction. Though It be some other man's boy whom you lead astray this can- not iustify you. V We do not dictate. We appeal to you as parents and as honorable citizens to take a stand against this grow- ing evil as'you would that others should do to you do you even so to them. ? We appeal to you whose oice it is, to enfore the law. Assuringyou that in so doing you will have the support of all right- thinking persons in the community. And we appeal to you who are in the trade to keep within the law. We learn from time to time of -breaches of the law on the part of certain houses. You have no more right to break the law than any other citizen and in your case the iniquity is greaterthan in ordinary cases of violation of the law inasmuch as the-very law which authorizes and protects you precludes all others from legally proting by the traic and any gain you make by it brings a curse and not a blessing. Finally we appeal again to every citizen to consider this matter and we ask you to throw your in- uence on the side of humanity, on the side of the home and on the side of the religion you profess, assured that in so doing you will contribute not only to your own well being, but to" the happiness and prosperity of your fellow men.
