On Wednesday evening last a few of the Barrie merchants and business men invited Mr McKim, the well-known dry anode man, into the sitting-room at the Queen's Hotel, and there surprised him by presenting him with a very beautiful smuker s set. The presentation was made by Sherif Phelps, `who expressed the satisfaction itgave him to know that, at least. one manin Barrie. had no enemies. He said that Mr. McKun had so man- aged that, though engaged in keen cum- petition, and surrounded by rivals, he had the good will of all. All regretted to see him leaving Barrie, but hoped he would be equally successful in makimz friends in Guelph. Mr. MOKIID. accept- ing the token of friendship handed to` him, seemed touched at the unexpected manifestation of kindness towards him, but managed to reply in a very modest way. The set presented to Mr. McKimi consisted of a tray. cigar bowl, match and cigarette holder, and dish for the cigar ashes. all of oxidised silver. lined with gold,` a fine meerchaum pipe and also a i briar ruot, both with magnicent amber mouth-pieces. .There were also in the case an amber cigar-holder and a smaller . one fer cigarettes. The cost ofthe whole ` set, which was bought from Mr. Douglas, I was 330.00. The Brigade consists of C sbbage Mike. the saved clog dancer. The trend of public opinion as evideno l ed at the late muuicimgl elections through- I out the county, has taught the reeves and deputies that some reduction in the cost of the county oauuoil was desirable . The November, session of` 1890 was largely occupied in discussing the question of abolishing that session or of sending reeves only to Barrie. After consider- able debate both motions were lost. but the electorate was heard from at the polls, and, the question of discontinuing the useleu November sitting was brought up nn Thursday last and speedily settled. Hereafter the Oounty Council will meet only in January and June, doing seven- teen days business in ten and saving the 31100. .
