"Facts for Truth-Lovers. f Some time ago we received a pamphlet entltled Facts for Truth-Lovers, with notes on various English Social Purity Societies, and correspondence between Miss Frances E. Willard, president of the Womeii s Christian Tempei-ance,Union and Mrs. E. H. Bradley, of England, thel mother of the White Shield Movement. The first part of the pamphlet is taken up by a description of various Social Purity Societies, their objects and scope with a history of the writer s relation to them. The mlial part of the pamhlet is taken up in tracing a diiculty which has arisen be- tween` her and the W.C.VT.U., and its President, Miss Willard, about a manual prepared by Miss Kate Bushnell, one of Miss Willard s lieutenants in which ;.most objectionable language is used and the strangest methods recommended to advance the cause of social purity. To the circulation of this Manual, with the title and device of the White Shield, Mrs. Bradley strongly objected, and demanded its suppression or the removal of the title which Mrs. Bradley claimed as her pro- perty. She interviewed Miss Willard and: corresponded with her with refer- ence to this matter, thewhole of which is set forth in the pamphlet. Although Mrs. Bradley went to Chicago "from Eng- land on Miss Willsrd s invitation, she was soon shown` the coldshoulder ob- stacles weie thrown in the way of her work. and it was announced in the Union I Signal, the organ of the.W. C. T. U ,I that Mrs. Bradley was out of the ranks, and by hint and inuendo the idea was sought to be conveyed that there was some potent, but indescribable reason for ex-| excluding the English woman from the sacred circle of W. C. T. U. workers. It is this sad story which Mrs. Bradley tells in her pamphlet, and so `far as Miss Willard and others have spoken, the only cause of this boycott is that Mrs. Brad- ley, by some unexplained alleged incom- patibility, cannot work in harmony with- Miss Willard and her fellow oicers. Whatever personal characteristics Mrs.| Bradley may possess which render it difficult to work with her Chicago sistersl of the W. 0. T. U. we shall not pre-' tend to determine. Mrs. Bradley's pamphlet must be read in orderthat her, story mav be understood. One thing, however, is pretty clear, Mrs. Bradley is frank. evidently sincere, earnest and out-spoken, and this, although lawful, may not always be expedient in dealing either with church or society matters if it be the desire to remain in smooth water.` 11!: In . - I `I - I ' A The order in council appointing the` census chief oioeifs has not yet been par 1 sad. but it is understood the following gentlemen have been recommended for the ~poaition:. ~ ~*l\..o...:z.-._.-'DnGA.- g"'nI\`IAi\l\I| nkndknni: o Ull III} IIU IIGIIIUIIC Quebec`-Evet-eat `Leblanc, Montreal; W. A telegram was read from him that he and two or more of his colleagues would be present, probably Sir John Thomp- son and Hon. Mr. Foster. Sir Johnwill probably do the old man act and work up the enthusiasm, and allow his colleagues to argue the case, the Minister of Justice from the diplomatic standpoint, and the Minister of Finance from the trade point of view. Aid Ijnamgn u.n..-.. I... `D.:.-....._ , OTTAWA, Feb. 3.-Said Hon. Mr. Foster to your correspondent: Nothing more can be said nbout the offer i rom Washington than has appeared, but full particulars will be given later. In New Brunswick the Gov- ernment stands to come back strong- or than at present. A strong fight will be made in St. John, with ngood prospect of carrying the three seats. Restigouche, Gloucester, Northuniberland, Kent, Wostnnorelnnd, Albert, King s, will, I think, present an unbroken front. Victoria will return the Minister of Inland Revenue withoutadoubt. Carleton stands fuirly to win. York will prohanly go by acclama- tion. Sunhury will stand by Mr. Wllinott and in Queen's and Charlotte I believe the old standard bearers will give a good account of themselves. New Brunswick wants no policy hatched out in a foreign country to destroy the independent state of Canada, to discriminate against British trade and raise a Chinese wall about our borders for the sole benet of one country, and that not our own. She will stand by the policy of wise protection to home indus- tries and reasonable reciprocity with any country that desires it. The Libernl~Con servatives are consistent in this policy and will reumiu so. The interests of Canada will with them be first.
