The phenomenal growth of the telephone system of Canada, which is stated in an in- teresting interview in another column, proves two things. One is that our people possess the intelligence which enables them to adapt modern scientic improvements to their use, and the other is that they are enterprising enough to put their money into whatever will facilitate their ability to transact business. Canada to-day has one of the most complete telephone systems in the world. and when our population is considered we are `probably at the head of the list _in the extent to which we have availed -ourselves of the most modern method of communication. The extensions which have been made this year show that the system is being consiantly developed. In Toronto the laying of underground cables and the use ct metallic circuits for each sub- scriber will greatly enhance the value of the telephone system. Under the energetic supervision of Mr. C. F. Sise. of Montreal, president of the Bell Telephone Company, their operations have been extended over a vast portion of-the Dominion. John Ker- foot and C. F. Wattie were nominated for Deputy-reeve. D. Garvin, D. "Wood, K. Oameron and Will. Orok for councilman. At 7 o'clock the returning oicer closed the nomination. a poll was demanded and grant- ed, and the proceedings adjourned for a week. The returning-otcer then left the chair. In order that the candidates might make their little speeches, Mr. Orchard was-voted into the chair, the speeches were made and the meeting closed. Before separating, one of the old couuoilmeu approached the new men and asked on what terms they would be willing to withdraw. After a good deal of bargaining, these good and true men, for the consideration of $25 cash and an oyster snpc per to the crowd, agreed to sell themselves out of the candidature. The money was at once paid down, each member ot the old council paying 35. The returning officer was sent for to receive the resignation of the purchased candidates. and the bargain was closed. Is it possible, `Mr editor, that the intelligent electors of Vespra will allow men to buy themselves into the council in this manner? ` Is it purely for the good of their constitutents they buy themselves into the council? A good many of the ratepayers would like to know how much money these liberal men were paid for their services last year, they took very good care not to show that the very unsatisfactory balance sheet they laid before the electors. There is every reason to believe that at the end of this year the ratepayers will pay that $25 the council paid for their seats. A Vnsrna Runrusa. YT .... -_ n_j 'I -_ 1611! >nS Municipal Elections. The elections on Monday excited consider- able interest and a fair proportion of the. civic vote was polled. There was an earnest and anxious look on the faces of some of the candidates which did not pass off till the re- sults of the elections were known. Considering the weather and the fact that there were other entertainments, one at the Town Hall and another at the Congrega- tional church, there was a fair audience, but _not at all comparable to the excellence of the music rendered. Theprogram was a varied one, and with one or two changes was car- ried out. Miss E. King gave an organ solo- the K Hallelujah chorus--in excellent style, and Mr. J. 0. Morgan, whose musical talents are so generally recognized, rendered two selections on the organ, to the delight of the appreciative audience. The various choruses by the choir were given in the usual expressive style, for which the choir is noted, and the soles by Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Crompton. of Brantford, Miss E. F. King, Miss Dyment, Mr. J. .8. Edwards, and Mr. A. W. Giles, were greatly enjoyed. In the sweet by and by by Mrs. F. M. Smith, Miss E. F. King and Messrs.
