Thursday `afternoon, in company with Mr. "Spry, Chairman of the School management `committee, the editor of THE ADVANCE paid a visitto the Central School. Every room was visited and as on previous visits, the order was excellent. In some of the rooms the teachers in training at the Model School, were in charge of the classes, trying their-prentice hands in developing the embryo intellect of Barrie, and they held the attention of the pupils well. Reading, writing`, geography, history, map-drawing, geometrical drawing, &c.. were among the subjects being taught. The earnest atten- tion of the pupils seemed to be rivitted to the work, showing that an interest has been awakened which cannot fail to have an the school and the after lite of the pupils. The same general system is seen from the lowest to the highest form. Much atten- tion is paid to writing which is taught on the same plan in every room.` Two special features of the system being the muscular movement, making more use of the muscles of the arm than of the ngers. and a natur- al position of the body. This will neces-' sarily result in readable penmanship and an easy, graceful attitude in the pupil, and means comfort at the counting-room desk, without compression of the lungs and its consequent results. The writing on slates in the primary department is characterized by neatness and accurate formation of letters and gures. This demonstrates that one of the B's, and a very important one, receives due attention. `Considerable attention is paid to calisthenics and military drilll, pro- ducing graoefuluess of movement and de- . velopement of muscles with expansion of lungs and due exercise of internal vital organs. Principal of the Collegiate Institute, returned, on Saturday, from Owen Sound, where he was engaged for some days in examining the teachers in-training for rst class certicates and assistant masterships in the high schools. Mr. Spotton expresses himself as well satised with the working of the training institutes and believes that the qualications of the high grades of teachers are now much in advance of what they were. No person can now be appointed to an asssist- ant mastership. or be ranked as a teacher of the first grade , until he proves not only his scholarship, but also his ability to impart what he knows. The training institute bears the same relation to the high schools as the model Idoesto the public schools, and the course appears to he very thorough.
