On Tuesday afternoon, at about 4 o'clock, Captain Andros left his residence near the hay, in the eastern part of Barrie, to sail to town with the collars of a new set of harness to get them slightly altered. There was a very sti and gusty breeze blowing of shore at the time. While anfaste ' his small yacht from her moorings, the `lo skid`. in which he put out to her, drifted out of his reach. He had forgotten to take the rudder with him from the boat house, but a couple of boys, who were shing close by brought it out to him. Meanwhile he had hoisted the sail. As soon as the rudder was in position he let the yacht run before the wind in pursuit of the ski. At about a hundred yards from the boat house he over- took the skill, and was about to seias it when a violent gust struck the sail and capsized the yacht. bar a few minutes he struggled with the yacht, which went almost entirely under water. The boys in the sh- ing boat, another boy in a ski, and Ir. Moran, w o happened to be rowing along near the s ore, pulled their boats out to assist him. While they were rapidly ap- proaching him he let go his hold of the almost sunken yacht, and was seen to strike out towards the skid which had again drifted away. After a faint call for help, however, he went under water, only two or threo minutes before the first boat reached the spot. He came up again in a different place, but before any of the boats got near he sank to rise no more. The water is very deep at that point, as it is in fact in every part of Kempeufeldt Bay, and it was utterly im- possible to decide exactly where he went down, or to render him any assistance, as the wind continued to blow furiously and drifted all the beats out into the bay. Had _ he remained on the yacht it would no doubt have held him up until help arrived, but by letting it go and trusting to his swimming to the ski' with his boots and all his clothes on he sacriced his only chance of escaping ` with his life. There were as many as seven , or eight people looking on along the shore and in the houses near by, but only the three boys and Mr. Moran were in a position even to make an attempt to save him. In a short time a number of boats were on the spot and grappling was commenced. Up to a late hour on Tuesday night the efforts to recover the body were unsuccessful. although a reward of $25 was at once offered. 'I"l..a !`V_..a....'.. 2- ---II --- " ` mmn[unnos nnuwm.
